I Ifl I _ fl Al 1202 Foster Avenue College Station, Texas 77840 r.► November 9, 1971 Dear At our meeting about two months ago you and several others asked me to withhold a prompt decision to you with respect to the race for state senator, pend- ing an opportunity, as you expressed it, for my review of the situation. This I have done, and on the basis of all factors have decided not to get into the fray at the present time. As I said earlier, my present position is not a factor, since I am eligible for retirement now and do not plan to die on the job. I will say, however, that one more year's service, for example, would provide a greater return than I could obtain in January. But, I would not hesitate to retire then, if I desired, or now. I might add that I did "test the waters" in the piney woods counties where I know the folks and could have support in the towns and the forks of the creek, and in my "home counties" of Houston and Trinity. As to Polk County (now in district), I have many friends who assured me of excellent support and even went so far as to assure me victory if I ran. I made a check of other peripheral counties as well, in a general sense, with folks I know, who assured me of their support. Regarding Brazos County, which you cited as the "key", I do believe I could run a good race. And, the forest industry would, I understand, help me if I ran. Oh, yes, the other group would too. But the overriding problem is organization and funds. The opposition has both at his disposal. I would call for a central active, dedicated group working on my behalf and this the "poor folks" could not give because of the intracies of politics. There would have to be an active group in each county as well. And, it would take money for publicity in all the counties. I personally do not have such funds. There are other considerations, too. . -2- Let me say that I am most humbled that you all would ask me to be your candidate for state senator. I am sorry if I let you down. With kindest personal regards. Yours very truly D. A. A erson, DAA/jk 1202 Foster Avenue College Station, Texas February 2l, 1972 Mr. J. A. Amis, System Attorney Texas A & M University System System Building College Station, Texas 77843 Dear Counsellor: For over a month now I have been wanting to flrop you a line with respect to the double standard as it relates to em- ployees of the System (staff and faculty) who wish to announce for public office. I refer to the policy statement of 1938 desig- nated as 203-55. In my own case, I was placed in the position of resigning or face dismissal should I have run for political office. Yet, another could do so with no action taken. It 'taint fair. I desire no action against another, This is not my intent. I merely wanted to point out the double standard, in a personal manner. (Andy) Anderson 1202 Foster E College Station, Texas Dear Andy; I want to thank you for taking the time to write me regarding several matters. First of all, I appreciate your renewed pledge of support to me in the forthcoming election. I have been listening to what people have been saying for the past week or ten days and it is most encouraging. As a matter of fact, I find people to be more enthusiastically behind me than anytime I can recall. It is much like you would expect in one ' s first race. I am also pleased to know that you still have some loyal supporters. This is quite understandable considering the kind of job the dedication you have provided when you have served in an elective office in the past. Andy, should you decide to run for State Senator two years hence, I strongly suspect that you will be opposing Bill Moore and not me. I am aware of the vicious rumor that is going around; however, I can assure you that it is a fabrication and not the truth. Congratulations upon your retirement from a long and dedicated career with the Texas Forrestry Service. May I wish for you and Mrs. Anderson a very fruitful retirement. Should your retirement be short-lived, may I wish you every success in your future endeavors. Sincerely, 4 ,0,.
