College Station, Taxes Dear Bob, I take this means of belat*Uy acka AMdging your letter of Septem ber 28. Such d*W on xV part was due to the fleet that I was in the field almost c atinuously sines, and including the date of the last council meeting. First, let me say that I appredate your letter. I am well aware of the time and effort put fwt!1 IV MW people tan this matter (including yourself ) and I shall suppcet and vark for an ordinance (span) to outlw por material in this comandty. My stand on %bL* is well known many p i MMO than ever, I an really concerned over the '%peak minds" of this t:oeeAnity who have taken it upon theLselves to move flrom out City (by c0ntimI-00 telephone badgering) Ju- Jviduais who parOMW &Conan against tpre►t existing evil and who I fear will succeed. in Ud r attempt. I an triad no end, also that no helg can be obtained for tits family from duly elected county authorities, When such a conttiUan eXsts, it does not allow a citizen to pursuit or heappixsse in his een hone. I tear for our communi and nation if such is allowed. It JeVU os "goon" tactics. I am hopeful that the good citizens of our conauni.ty will rise up against this sit ration. As I was not at the last council rsseeting I cannot say what I would have done. For roe to say otherwise would not be right. I feel sure however that I would have supported pmt acUon on the matter under c:msideration. But be tuAt as it may, I can awe you, Bob at AW full support of an ordinance at an early date. I will not let the satter die. I am not un- mindful of uW responsibiliti to 8fst« As for standing up for what I think is principle, I believe xV past experiences in the Council (when I stood alone) will attest to this. And I pray that I do not falter on other utters. Incidentally, you mw recall one city council meeting (as I recall, You sere present) whex -r I wooed the Council to Man each meeting with a PrWw, iuvOlking God's bltsatne Wpm our proceedings. Lip service was given, toe a ction being donee twice and fea•gotten,. I cite this only because you referred to the place of Ood in Civic matters. Bob, theoks for your letter. The viers which you expressed and the stand you Uft miss sw feel ame, highly of you. I am truly happy to call you a Iregm and a the ed. A copy of this letter is going forward only to Roy, Barb Longshwe for whom I also have the Veatest respect. Bob, aulong other ministers, has taken a positive stand on pornographic material, not one of researvatiao as to what "liberal thinkers" of his church would think. God b1MS seen tiles him, also. $ine* DAA: jp D. A. Anderson College Station City Council College Station, Texas Gentlemen: No one, I feel, has a deeper appreciation for the time, effort and talents you devote to our city and of the problems and complaints that you must contend with. Few realize better than I they frailties of the human flesh; the temptation to take the easy path. And, I seriously.doubt if anyone was more ashamed of a portion of our city council who stood tonight to be counted as Christians and refused to do as their con dictated. It was not-at though you knew not what was right and what`*as wrong, or what was the Christian thing to do or not to do. You prow fessed that. Instead you hid behind some of the most unc"tianlihe excuses that your humen.-mentalitiee could provide, One;of my fraternal brothers on the council to-O" to.o of our group that they M a*a Moth worshiped the me Christ. I was glad he did not .say so to gee. The Christ _t xorslri.p judges men by his scrks, not by his attendance, at Sunday worship. My Brother, you passed up one wonderful opportunity to stand up for your Christ. You were not alone. Three of you stood to be counted. You had the support of a group who had just returned from a special prayer meeting plus the signatures of some four hundred and seventy citizens who favored a stand for Christian ideals. You failed when you knew what was right. Perhaps you did not believe Him when He said "Blessed are they who are curried and despised for try sake ". I.realize there are those who would criticize you'..forp4saing such an altruistic resolution, but for your over asks don't say you. ere doing it as a faithful believer in the philosophy our Christ gave us. Uu deliberately passed up a wonderful opportunity that few of us over heave, to take a stand for Christ. I hope the Holy Spirit that He breathed into you troubles you until you complete the task you failed in this night; just as At would not let me sleep until I slipped out of bed to write my thoughts to.gou. Don't hide behind the mask that we muit wait until the Bryan city council is ready to pass a similar ordinance. If they are P.hristains, your positive action would have given them added incentive. We do not have to shame them. We can show them the'way. If you want to encourage them, how could you give them better support than by calling to the attention of the citizens of Bryan the good works you have done. I fail to understand waxy s Christian is afraid to be criticized for having done a Christain deed. Those of you who desire to wait for action in Bryan have wasted two good months since you directed our attorney to draw up a resolution. I realize it has been difficult to have a joint meeting, but would this have been necessary if our proposal had been a project you were sincerely devoted to? You are probably aware of the fact that a letter pertaining to this subject was read to the Bryan Council, and that it was set aside with no further action specified? Is this why you prefer to waitfDr Bryan's cooperation? Don't wait for the Federal Government to take action. They have far more politics to contend with than you do. Then, too, if you are so liberal minded that you are afraid of censuring the press, you Wahould favor local option in preference to federal control. Don't be concerned with the opinion of our U. S. Supreme Court in such a matter. We all know that there is practically no chance that the present supreme court would uphold any resolution you passed. I seriously doubt that any of our local people would care to spend the money necessary to carry it to that court. W4 also realize that this is not A mesas of ending sin. It is certainly one step to reduce temptation, to reduce the spreading of anti- christian propaganda; to stop the teachinS that then acstasay of rape is far greater than that of husband and wife relationships. I wish I could have saluted you as Christian Gentlemen, but I was afraid it would have been somewhat hypocritical. I envied you tonits. You had such a golden opportunity to show Christian gesntlananeess. I would have stood, but by the time I had the opportunity I w&3 so sick of your delaying actions that I was afraid of what I might says I, who have no children, should argue with you for the sake of your own; You know as well as I that the longer the action is postponed, the lass pressure our citizens will bring to bear capon you; that enthusiasms will lessen and no action will be necessary. Gentlemen, if you are proud of your actions,, you have my sympathy. It is my earnest prayer that Hem who gave you the Holy Breath of Life any give you of His Wisdom that you may know Him will, and of His Strength to do it. Please do not let the cock crow a third time and find you sleeping. Rarnestly and prayerfully,
