NOMINATION FOR TEXAS CHAPTER, SAF
FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO FORESTRY AWARD
Nominee: D. A. "Andy" Anderson
Address and position: 1202 Foster E., College Station. Currently Head,
Information and Education Department, Texas Forest Service and Mayor of
the City of College Station.
Evidence of Continuinq Service and Leadership in Society of American Foresters
Active in the Society since early 1930's; among the first pioneer
Texas foresters and original founders of Texas Chapter. Served as
Secretary- Treasurer and Vice Chairman of Gulf States Section; served on
numerous committees for Section and Chapter meetings in Texas and National
SAF in New Orleans. Author of six articles in the Journal of Fo
Member, National SAF Committee, Silviculture, late 1940's and SAF Com-
mittee that developed Society's Forestry Handbook Provided leadership
in preparing and printing Texas Chapter publication, "Forestry As a
Career," published in 1966. Also assisted in preparing Forestry Career
Day slide set currently used by the Chapter. Member of the Chapter Career
Day Committee, 1965 and Chapter Membership Committee, 1967. Presented
numerous papers at Chapter, Section and National SAF meetings.
Prof essional Achievement in Forestry or Allied Field
1. Provided principal leadership in Texas to the introduction of for-
estry in conservation education in the public school systems. An organizer

of and the only member representing the forestry profession on the Texas
Advisory Committee on Conservation Education to the Texas Education Agency.
Gave principal leadership in obtaining coordinator on Conservation Educa-
tion to the Agency. Author of numerous publications and three forestry
textbooks for school teachers to introduce forestry into public school
education. Has conducted many teacher workshops on forestry. Active member
of the National Conservation Education Association and served on numerous
committees for this group. Currently heading up State committee planning
curriculum in conservation education for pre- service teachers.
2. One of the original members of the Southern Forest Tree Improvement
Committee. Active in providing early impetus to tree improvement. Produced
first layman tree improvement brochure widely distributed in the South.
3. Provided leadership in development and early operation of Indian
Mound Forest Tree Nursery, near Alto, in the late 1930's and early 1940's.
4. Provided leadership in getting legislative passage of a bill re-
establishing Arbor Day in Texas in 1949 and provides continuing leadership
to its observance.
5. First to investigate and experiment with radio communications for
forest fire control efforts in Texas.
6. Helped establish programs of annual adult youth forestry work-
shops and camps for Texas vocational agriculture teachers, county agents and
4 -H and FFA youth.
7. Played major role in establishing Tree Farm program in Texas.

8. Played major role in establishing the Sears Forestry Awards Program
for FFA Chapters and 4 -H Clubs; the only one of its kind in the United States.
9. Author of some 30 publications on a wide variety of forestry sub-
jects.
10. Author of hundreds of articles on forestry in teacher, farmer,-
industry and youth periodicals and the Journal of Forestry
11. Former secretary, Texas Forestry Association.
Activities of Service to Local or Regional Committees
1. Currently serving second term as Mayor of College Station. Pre-
viously served three terms as city councilman and two years on Planning and
Zoning Commission. Active in Texas Municipal League; currently serving on
Taxation and Revenue Committee.
2. Active in Masonic work; currently Chairman of Brazos Valley Shrine
Club.
3. Member of board of directors of:
a. Brazos Valley Development Council.
b. Brazos County Civil Defense Board.
c. Brazos County Community Council.
d. Brazos County Health Department.
e. Brazos Area Planning Corporation.
4. Member of Texas Outdoor Writers Association, Texas Forestry Asso-
ciation, a vice president of a national philatelic association, Bryan - College
Station Chamber of Commerce and American Stamp Dealers Association, among
others.

5. Deacon and past chairman, Board of Deacons, First Presbyterian
Church.
6. Honors he has received include:
a. Presidential Citation Award, Texas Garden Clubs.
b. Honorary FFA State Lone Star Farmer.
c. Honorary Modern Farmer Degree (State Award) for Contribution
to Negro Youth, Prairie View A &M University.
d. Outstanding Citizen, 1969, College Station Kiwanis Club.
e. Outstanding Citizen, 1969, Brazos Valley American Legion

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- David A. "Andy" Anderson of College Station was named
Texas' Outstanding Forester by members of the Gulf States Section, Society
of American Foresters.
Last year's honoree, E. R. Wagoner of Lufkin, presented the
1970 award for Distinguished Service to Forestry in Texas to Anderson

at the 44th Annual Meeting of the Section in Biloxi, Mississippi, May i£i.
The Gulf States Section includes more than a thousand professional
foresters from Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Each state annually
selects one of its members to receive this award.
Anderson has been active in SAF affairs since the early 1930's,
is one of the pioneer foresters in Texas, a founder of the Texas Chapter,
and has served as vice - chairman and secretary - treasurer of the Gulf
States Section. He is author of numerous professional articles and
publications; a contributing editor to the Society's Forestry Handbook
and provided leadership in publishing Texas Chapter publications on
forestry as a career.
Anderson is beginning his third term as Mayor of College Station,
and previously served three terms as a City Counsilman and two terms
on the city's Planning and Zoning Commission. He is a director on numerous
county boards, and currently serves on the Taxation and Revenue Committee
of the Texas Municipal League.

Past honors and awards include the Presidential Citation Award
from Texas Garden Clubs, Inc.; Honorary FFA State Lone Star Farmer;
Honorary Modern Farmer Degree from Prairie View A&M University; named
Outstanding Citizen in 1969 by the College Station Kiwanis Club; and
named Outstanding Citizen of 1969 by the Brazos Valley American Legion.
Anderson is a, deacon and past chairman of the Board in•the First
Presbyterian Church; is active in Masonic work and is currently serving
as chairman of the Bra.zos Valley Shrine Club. He is a. member of the
Bryan- College Station Chamber of Commerce; and a member and former
secretary of the Texas Forestry Association.
Previous Texas awardees include Ted Silker, A. D. Folweiler, Don
Young, Lud King, Nathan Canterbury, Raymond Gipson and Laurence C. Walker.

base here, while we still have the freedom to do so. Educational methods

I am still "involved" in work of the Craft. I never did com-

Club with all of its ramifications in charitable activities. A to
