HomeMy WebLinkAbout1964 The A&M WorkshopperPage -+ Petite Student from Pakistan ! Arrives To Study in Aggieland A touch of the East flavors Aggieland. Sari -clad Miss Jinnat Ara Begum of Pakistan has been studying here since July 5. The petite, dark - complexioned brunette will return to her home country after two years of study. Studying food technology, Miss Begum will have her masters degree when she begins teaching at the East Pakistan Agricultural University as the first woman in- structor in the history of the school. Her soft, quiet manner speaks well for her Hindu breeding, and she speaks well for American education. She says that school- ing in Pakistan is very expensive but much more advanced and competitive than in the United States. Four and five - year -olds whose parents can afford the ex- pense are sent to school and may continue into a seventh year only after passing grueling exams. The remarkable thing about Mrs. King Gets Delegation's Nod For National Post A telegram supporting Mrs. Edith King, workshop newspaper section head, for national vice president of Theta Sigma Phi, professional journalism honor society for women will be sent by students and s t a f f of the Texas A &M High School Publi- cations Workshop to the sorority convention in August. Workshoppers voted to endorse her candidacy as a San Antonio Chapter representative to the na- 'Donal assembly in California. Mrs. King is director of publi- cations at San Antonio College and is sponsor of the yearbook. After graduating from the Uni- versity of Texas with a bachelor of arts and a masters degree in journalism she taught at the Fox Technical High School in San Antonio before assuming her po- sition at SAC. Mrs. King is now president of the San Antonio Theta Sigma Phi organization. the remarkable Miss Begum is the silent fortitude which ema- nates and forms a mysteriously impenetrable mist about her without use of the gesticulation and .incessant babble so charac- teristic of American counterparts. Shangri-La The tiny lady sat with her hands folded in her pink silk lap and showed from the depths of thickly veiled eyes vestiges of traditions and culture older than the gates of Shangri -La. Miss Begum's sixty -five year old father has reared and edu- cated a family of ten children. All but one have graduated from universities; a brother is now taking a masters at the Univer- sity of Boston. "My father told us when we were children that the one goal he would obtain would be that of a college education for all of us. He said, `When I do this for you it will be your duty to pass on this wonderful opportunity to your children.' We are all in great debt and deeply appreciate his gift." With Success And she means to repay her father, not only with the im- measurable gratitude and re- spect which Easterners seem to want to give the elderly, but with success in her teaching that only her tempestuous ambition can bring about. The ambition, along with all her other secrets, of Turkish spires and snake charmers, of yoga and turbans and caste marks on olive foreheads —will remain perhaps hidden in the eyes forever, treading only softly. 1tiJ_'. Using a 21 -page questionnaire, the camper is given an interview asking the facilities he desires such as electricity, running wa- ter, grills, picnic tables, swim- ming areas, garbage disposal and the reasons for wanting these. Members of the Department will interview in Huntsville State Park, Ratcliff Recreational Area, Red Hills Recreational Area, Boy- kin Springs Recreational Area and Stubblefield Recreational Area, all located in the East Texas National Park area. Journalism Dubbed 'Only Field' At `Meet the Press' Session BY GIPPY BIRDSONG Can so many people be wrong? Twenty -five distinguished area journalists submitted to inter- views from workshoppers in the Memorial Student Center ball- room Tuesday night. Each jour- nalist in the "Meet the Press" session recommended their pro- fession as the "only" field for young people. Guests represented twelve fields of news communications and varied personalities, but all were sold on journalism as a promising, rewarding career. Miss Ann Abshier, Columbia Gulf Transmission Company journalist and Miss Ellen Vena- ble, Humble Research Center technical writer each said they would give up their careers if they were not able to work in some journalistic endeavor. Mrs. Susan Asfahl, an indus- trial editor and Mr. Dan Louis Jr., Houston Post reporter, were introduced to journalism in un- usual ways. Mr. Louis decided "to give it a whirl for a year" when offered his first reporting job and found in that opportuni- ty his life's work. Mrs. Asfhal's early interest in the field prompted her to take her first job on a small -town newspaper at five cents per published inch. "You just don't get this kind of satisfaction in anything but journalism," declared Mr. Jack Sheridan, Houston Post reporter. High school journalism teach- ers were represented in the pro- fession's line -up by Mrs. Elaine Pritchett of Houston Memorial High School. "I have been in nearly every phase of journalism from radio to advertising to public relations, and as much as I like profes- sional journalism, I most enjoy passing on my knowledge to interested young people." Other journalists participating in the interview included Mr. William Clayton of United Press International; Mr. Myles Knape, p u b l i c relations department, Hughes Tool Co.; Mr. Farris vncLay, July 1 i, igo Editor Butler Speaks Challenge To Potential Young Journalists "The world needs to know, and it must see through your eyes," Mr. Jack Butler, editor of the Fort Worth Star Telegram, told journalism students in an address Tuesday. Describing the life of a journalist, the veteran news- paperman reminded students that the thing which keeps reporters in the profession is the knowledge that " ... at any moment that wonderful lightning may strike and you are in the midst of the most exciting thing that is hap- pening anywhere. It's all yours Area Big Wheels Learn from Meet Among the workshop journal- ists who have been stretching their noses and bugging their eyes this past w e e k are nine workers who display more than a local interest in their student writing careers. Tony Castro, Waco University High newspaper editor next year, is the dual personality as he holds the reins over the Cen- tral Texas High School Press As- sociation and at the same time plays second -in- command at the Texas High School Press Associ- ation. Joining Tony as a representa- tive of the CTHSPA are all three of the other officers. Barbara Johnson of Waco Richfield High, vice - president of CTHSPA, has already been editor of her school paper for a year and served as page three editor for The Work- shopper this year. Secretary of the association is Judy McFarlen of Waco Univer- sity High and treasurer, Ryan McNulty of Killeen. Also represented at the Aggie- land workshop are officers of the Texas Gulf Coast High School Press Association. A former high school news- paper editor, Mr. Butler has been associated with the Star Tele- gram since 1942, having been a reporter, city editor, news editor and assistant managing editor with that publication. The speaker challenged the 350 workshoppers to "Think of the charts your generation can draw with your typewriters, your cameras and your electronic thingamubobs. The exploration of other planets, perhaps other constellations; The exploration of a microscopic world that will end the terrors of diseases which now beset us; The exploration of men's minds, so that there may be a way to turn from ha- tred and crime and war." Impromptu debates have been staged in the rooms, the halls and the lobby concerning the parade of events surrounding the GOP meeting. Views expressed by some students with political interests caused others to be in- terested in Republican affairs, if only to "hold their own" when delegates began discussing the relative merits of Senator Barry Goldwater. "We couldn't wait until our twenty -first birthday to decide our political philosophies," one delegate suggested. "The interest shown in politics during this week would seem to demonstrate that teeen minds aren't all bubble gum and bobby sox," one sponsor commented. Best advanced notebooks were entered by Marley Smith of Uni- versity High, Mary Esther San- doval of Fox 'tech and Sandra McCollum of Huntsville.
