MINUTES
BRAZOS COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION
Bryan Public Library

1. CaII to order by the Chair
Chairman, Charles Schultz, called the meeting to order at 7:OOPM.
Members present: Charles R. Schultz, Anne Boykin, Barbara Althaus,
Nancy Schwart, John Blair, Bill Page, Colleen Batchelor and Shawn
Carlson.
2. Designate a Secretary for the April meeting
Shawn Carlson volunteered to be the designated secretary for the
meeting.
3. Introduction of guests
No guests were present.
4. Approval of minutes of the March 12, 2007 meeting
A motion was made by Barbara Althaus and seconded by Nancy Schwart
to approve the minutes of the March 12, 2007, meeting. Motion carried.
5. Unfinished business
A. TAMU Main Drill Field marker
Charles reported that the field marker is in place and will be dedicated at a
yet to be determined date.
B. Memorial for Providence Missionary Baptist Church
Charles had nothing to report on the Providence Missionary Baptist
Church, though he did indicate that progress was being made on site.
C. Historical marker for Isom Palmer (1811 -1874) in Bryan Cemetery
John Blair reported that a pink granite marker has been placed at the foot
of Palmer's grave. The cemetery advisory board will meet on Tuesday
(April 10' to determine a dedication date.
D. Old Bethel Cemetery marker application
No news was reported. Colleen Batchelor reported that the author of the
application was planning to rewrite it. Colleen suggested that this item be
removed from the agenda until there is some action to report.
E. BCHC information on Brazos County WEB site
Colleen reported that Bronius Motekaitis, the Brazos County website
manager, has been working on BCHC's presence on the website. He
wants to have an accurate map of the historic marker locations before
posting the marker narratives. Colleen stated that the map information
could be obtained from Henry Mayo, whose son has taken pictures of the
markers and recorded their GPS coordinates. There was some

discussion about the current number of markers and the availability of
their narratives. Charles stated that there are now 60 markers. Narratives
are missing for the first 30 thirty markers. Charles has narratives
beginning with marker 31 - -when he became chair of the BCHC —up
through number 60. Colleen suggested making a public records request
to the Texas Historical Commission to obtain the narratives for the first 30
markers. Charles said that virtually none of the remaining markers were
in electronic format. Barbara Althaus volunteered to retype the narratives
and Nancy Schwart volunteered to proof them. John Blair also offered to
help retype narratives. Charles will e -mail a complete list of the markers
to Commission members; Colleen will use the list to make a public
records request. Charles also stated that he has some records from a
previous Chair, Mary Bess Young, and will check those for narratives.
F. Rock Prairie Church and School
No news was reported.
G. Marker for Reliance Cemetery
Charles reported that he had missed the application deadline for this year.
6. New Business
A. Archaeology Committee report
No news was reported due to the absence of Tom Lynch.
B. Education Committee report
No news was reported
C. Historical Markers and Research Committee report
Bill Page reported that he is continuing his research on Brazos County
schools and also on North Main Street (the section north of 26th street).
D. Other New Business
1. Charles reported that he had received a telephone call from a woman
who lives on 31st Street inquiring about a marker for her house. Charles
contacted Bob Brinkman at the THC marker office and will send him
photographs of the house. Charles noted that the house was probably
built in the 1930s and has had a significant addition built.
7. Correspondence of the Chair
Charles reported that he had received no correspondence since last
month.
8. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 8:10PM.
