Home My WebLink About2006 HPC Accomplishments for 2006 HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE 1 ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR 2006 AMERICAN MILE Jan. 17, 2006 - Steve Beachy requested the participation of the HPC in the American Mile project. The historical parks feature consists of a one mile walking path with pavers commemorating significant events in our world and local histories. He requested the HPC to prepare the historical timeline for the project. Tom Taylor and 8 -10 volunteers from the community worked on the project for eight months. Each entry in the timeline was researched and evaluated for its impact on our local history. Dedication of the American Mile was completed on April 27, 2007. HISTORIC DISTRICTS January 17, 2006 -Ms. Bratten Thomason (Certified Local Government Program, Texas Historical Commission, Austin) presented historic district information to the HPC and later that evening at a public meeting of neighborhood groups. March 23, 2006 — Historic District presentation to Council by Ms. Bratten Thomason June 22, 2006 — Neighborhood preservation options presentation at Council Workshop by Lindsay Boyer (Staff Planner, P &DS); Staff presented options for neighborhood preservation and discussed what is to be considered as historic. As per City Council direction an RFQ was prepared to seek a consultant to prepare an Historic District enabling ordinance. UPDATE ON RIGHT OF WAY CONSTRUCTION AT GEORGE BUSH AND WELBORN ROAD Feb. 6, 2006 - At the request of HPC committee members, Chad Bohnie (TxDOT) presented the plans for a grade separation at Wellborn and George Bush Drive and its potential impact upon the Southside Historic area. The projected start date is 2010 and a projected date of completion is 2013. COLLEGE HILLS STREETLIGHTING March 27, 2006 — Staff hosted the groundbreaking of the first of 100 reproduction vintage streetlights to be installed in the East Gate area of College Hills. HERITAGE HUNT May 20, 2006 — Heritage Day in the Parks hosted by HPC members and Neighborhood Services Staff was held. The event acquainted families with the history of several of our city parks. Participants picked up passports with small maps to Bryson Park, Carter Park, Wolf Pen Trail and Project HOLD at City Hall. This event, however, failed to attract the number of residents as the committee had hoped. CITY COUNCIL HISTORICAL TOUR August 24, 2006 — Historical Areas of Interest Tour presented by Lindsay Boyer (Staff Planner, P &DS) for Council, other City Staff personnel, and members of the HPC as requested by the City Council at the June 22, 2006 City Council Workshop meeting. The tour featured neighborhoods that are fifty years or older and other areas of historic interest. HPC BY -LAWS Nov. 6, 2006 — HPC members adopted By -Laws as written by a sub - committee chaired by Tom Taylor. November 20, 2006 — HPC By -Laws were ratified by the City Council. EXPLORING HISTORY LUNCH LECTURE SERIES Attendance at these programs has grown from a handful of senior citizens to groups of 125 and more including business professionals, educators, city employees and retirees. Lunch lectures are now being offered on a voluntary contribution basis in order to offset some of the cost of the meals. Lectures air throughout the month on Channel 19. Materials and visual aids generated for the lecture are scanned into Project HOLD. Exhibits: Two exhibits were developed and displayed at the College Station Conference Center during 2006. • February — November - "Brides of the Brazos ", Memorabilia and photographs from local brides primarily from the post -war years. • December — current - "Panther Pride: Coach Jerome R. Delley, Jr. and the Lincoln Panther Football Team, 1949 — 1965 ", Photos and memorabilia of the Lincoln football coach and teams. This exhibit will be sent to Lincoln Center for permanent display in July. • Moment in History E -Mail Newsletter: An occasional e -mail to City Staff and Neighborhood Services database denoting "moments in history" is now a publication that features pertinent topics of local historical interest in an in -depth format using material from the Project HOLD files. The majority of these issues are emailed to City employees and the Neighborhood Services database of 600. Attendance runs between 90 -130 guests each month and contributions are averaging about one - fourth of the cost of providing for the meal. No Meeting Show PROJECT HOLD information during the mealtime to increase awareness. Historic Preservation Committee -3- 5/7/2007 HISTORIC MARKER PROGRAM Goals: 1. Increase awareness of the program among residents 2. Increase the number of qualified historic markers being placed 3. Update all historic marker documentation Strategies: • Send letters to potential recipients. • Create an updated brochure and application form. • Request a "Special to the Eagle" or "Opinions" article in the Eagle regarding the program. • Schedule a television appearance. • Request space in the electric utility statement to publicize the program • Update on the website. ORAL HISTORY PROJECT 1. Compile a list of prospective interviews that need to be done within the next 12 months 2. Contact prospective interviewees for permission 3. Assign a team member to do the interview 4. Use volunteer summer intern to handle the details of recording and placing on the web site. 5. Determine the method for editing oral histories and begin the process. 6.
