Lacey Kirk Williams / Author(s): Horace, Lillian B. ; Booth, L. Venchael,; 1919 - Publication: Hicksville, N.Y. : Exposition Press, Edition: 1st ed. Year: 1978 Description: 246 p. This book is taken from a manuscript written in the early 1940s, and was based on a series on interviews with a Baptist minister named Rev. Williams. Rev. Williams was born in Alabama in the early 1870s, and moved to the Brazos bottoms as a child with his parents and extended family. The book provides some information on his parents' lives as slaves, a good bit of information on their religious life, mentioning Rev. D.H. Shivers (whom they knew in Alabama and who moved to Brazos Co. before them, sending back letters concerning opportunities in Texas). Rev. Shivers was minister of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bryan for 50 years. The book also spends a fair amount of time describing their relocation to Texas, including information about their travel by ship and landing in Galveston. Much of the book concerns Rev. Williams' life as a young adult in Brazos and Burleson Counties, in the 1890s, giving information on the organization of Washington Chapel in College Station in 1894, for example. Williams later moved to the north, where he became vice - president of the Baptist World Alliance. The book skimps on a lot of details, of course, and simply doesn't deal with alotof areas of interest, but-it i the he best source for this area during this time period which I have seen so far ... And it includes some surprising (at least to me) stories, including_Williams' friendship as &teenager with a white_ teacher in a rural school, who was an agnostic ... Not exactly what I would have expected, for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, but not suprisingly, the book is long out of print. However, you should be able to find a used copy for sale by searching: www.bookfinder.com This website indexes books for sale by hundreds of used book dealers - it is a very dangerous place to visit <g> http : / /email.cstx.gov /gw/webacci User. context =km9gp3Sfcjulmodlia &It...2. 843& Ud.
