HomeMy WebLinkAboutGarner to seek re-election 2001 News Release February 19, 2001 GARNER TO SEEK RE- ELECTION TO COLLEGE STATION CITY COUNCIL, PLACE THREE COLLEGE STATION -- Winnie Garner will seek re- election for College Station City Council, Place 3. Garner was first elected to this position in May 1999 after serving for five years on the Planning and Zoning Commission. She has been serving the citizens of College Station for the past ten years on various committees and projects. "Through my experience on the City Council and other citizen committees, I have been able to offer my time, input, and skills on behalf of College Station residents. I want to continue this commitment and am therefore seeking re- election to the College Station City Council. I believe in the outstanding potential of our city and its citizens." Garner is committed to a unified council that involves citizens as well as the development community in the processes that take place in our city government. "We must systematically reach out and involve our citizens and our developers so that the plan becomes not just the council's plan or the developer's plan, but Our Plan." Some of the critical issues that Garner has been involved with during her tenure on the City Council include: • Building a stronger council -city manager form of government • The city's strategic planning process • Ordinance and code revisions to the comprehensive land use plan • Preparation for the de- regulation of electric power • New technology for improved city services and information access • Salary equity for city employees • New business parks for increased economic development • New landfill location • Area tourism • Joint legislative committee with the city of Bryan • Non - smoking ordinances for the cities of Bryan and College Station • Regional planning Garner believes it is important to continue involvement in the regional planning effort for the Brazos Valley. She has been serving as Chair of the Transportation sub - committee for the regional planning co-op committee of the Brazos Valley Council of Governments for the past year. During this time, she has organized tasks forces to study the transportation improvement process in our 7 county region to include future air transportation needs. Garner has been active in pursuing educational opportunities and training. She has earned certificates of achievement by attending Texas Municipal League seminars and training for mayors and council members and a Livable Cities conference. "These sessions provided valuable information about legislative issues and planning for the future growth of the city," says Garner. Garner has 29 years experience in business management and marketing. For the past 12 years she has been an officer at First American Bank and is currently a Vice President in the Marketing department. Garner has been a resident of College Station for 20 years.
