HomeMy WebLinkAboutLetter from Public Works CITY OF COLLEGE STATION December 22, 2010 Ms. Anne Boykin Historic Preservation Committee Dear Ms. Boykin, Thanks you for meeting with Mr. McLemore on October 26 to discuss the status of the College Station Conference Center — Annex. I received the letter of November 1, 2010 requesting a review of the Annex to determine the cost of bringing it up to current building code standards for use as a College Station Museum and Archives, with meeting and office space. As you have noted this building is 7o years old and a cursory review of the structure and property has revealed that, at a minimum, the building and entrance will require retrofit to accommodate ADA access, the site may require re- grading or other measures to prevent water infiltration into the building, the roof will need to be inspected and may require spot repairs if not a new roof, the mechanical systems will need to be evaluated and perhaps upgraded or replaced, there have been reports of a water leak under the building slab that will have to addressed, and the exterior sheathing will need to be replaced. There may be other problems that are not apparent by brief inspection such as lead -based paint and /or asbestos. As you also noted in your letter funds were requested, but not approved, to demolish the building. Our plans are to keep the structure shuttered. The Public Works Department does not have funds, or expertise, available to perform a comprehensive evaluation of the site and structure or develop an estimate for rehabilitation. At this point, it is still the Public Works Department's recommendation to demolish the building as funds become available.
