I will know by this afternoon if I have been approved by the Commissioners Court. I will be serving in the place vacated by Molly Hitchcock, Sr. Planner, Dept. of Planning & Development Services, COCS. The term is for two years. 1) TAMU Drill Field Marker – In place, waiting for a time to be set for the dedication. 2) Memorial for the Providence Missionary Baptist Church – Construction has started. 3) Historical marker for Isom Palmer (1811-1874) in Bryan Cemetery – In place, but currently undergoing repairs. 4) Old Bethel Cemetery Marker – Application received. 5) Brazos River Marker – Missing, reported to Sheriff’s Dept. 6) BCHC web site -http://www.tamu.edu/baum/bchc.html State marker in Brazos County listing. Will be be including the narratives as well as the marker texts. 7) NEW Official Texas Historical Marker Information – On the web www.thc.state.tx.us Marker applications will only be accepted during a small window of opportunity each year. The 2007 deadline was from November 15, 2006 – Jan. 2, 2007. 8) Rock Prairie Church and School – Major discussions. Synopsis: Weingarten owns the land and building but not until the “family heirs” remove the contents; Weingarten will begin construction on the property in the next 3-4 months; Edsel Jones, spokesperson for the Royder family says the cost of moving the building to their already reserved location could be $50,000 or more. The family does not have the funds to do so, nor do they have the funds to maintain the building. Weingarten wants to “do the right thing.” However, they have not been told what that is. The church members do not necessarily have a spokesperson. There are hand hewn and carved pews and pulpit inside. Bill Page suggested that the COCS purchase the church, move it to the new cemetery and restore it for use as a chapel to show that COCS is serious about preservation.* Julie Schultz reporting. 9) 2nd Annual Brazos Valley History Fair, Washington on the Brazos – Funding approved. 10) Reliance Cemetery and Church – Application pending. *A spin-off discussion was held concerning COCS and its supposed lack of action concerning historic districts. Julie Schultz discussed the slow to no progress exhibited by the COCS and the HPC. I did my best to explain the RFQ and the UDO. Concern was expressed about the lack of preservation efforts being made in the Northgate and Southside areas, specifically. Also, some members have expressed difficulty in navigating the Project HOLD website and Laserfiche. I suggested that they try the new version and get back to me with any issues. ###
