CITY OF SAN ANTONIO CIVIL DEFENSE fig:
115 Auditorium Circle
San Antonio, Texas 78205
CA5 -1567 CA2 -8822
SPEND A REALISTIC NIGHT IN A FALLOUT SHELTER
The City of San Antonio Office of Civil Defense, in cooperation with the State
of Texas Office of Defense & Disaster Relief, and Texas A & M University,
Engineering Extension Service Civil Defense Training, will conduct a 32 hour
course designed to train selected individuals as Shelter Management Instructors
on June 14, 15 & 16th. Graduates of this course will be qualified to train
vitally needed local Fallout Shelter Managers and their staffs.
An "In- shelter" exercise, beginning at 5 :00 PM, Wednesday, June 15th, and
concluding approximately 6:00 AM Thursday, June 16th, will provide practical
experience in organizing a shelter staff, using shelter supplies and equipment,
and coping with the personal and social problems of shelter living.
You, as an individual who has received specialized Civil Defense Training,
such as Shelter Management, Radiological Monitoring, Basic Survival, Medical
Self -Help, or any other of the recognized OCD /DOD Training Courses, are espec-
ially invited to participate in this realistic venture of over 12 hours in as
actual fallout shelter, Municipal Auditorium Basement, which is only one of
over 235 marked and stocked Public Fallout Shelters in our community.
We anticipate between 500 and 1000 of our citizens will take advantage of this
rare opportunity to experience, during peace time, a little of the reality
that would occur while in actual shelter occupancy, during a fallout situation
after a nuclear attack. The persons we expect to attend will be those who
have had formal Civil Defense Training, persons who belong to groups that are
dedicated to the saving of life, the curious, those who would like the exper-
ience for themselves and for their families, and the general public.
-2-
If you are interested in attending, please let us know by returning our
self- addressed post card as soon as possible in order that we have a general
idea of the size of crowd we might expect.
There is no need for other special arrangements. You can come as you are,
right from your work or home; you can change into comfortable clothing (we
suggest the ladies wear slacks, if possible); you can bring a blanket to sleep
on; bring a transistorized radio, so you can keep informed with the world
situations; but please don't bring any food. We will furnish the survival
rations and stored water that actually exists within public fallout shelters.
We will have sufficient for all, plus emergency medical supplies, and sanitat-
ion supplies, which are also in each and every shelter that is currently
stocked within our community.
The date is Wednesday, June 15th; the Time of shelter entry is 5:00 PM; the
Place of entry is the "lest entrance to Municipal Auditorium Basement; the time
of emergence from the shelter will be between 6:00 AM and 8 :00 AM, Thursday
June 16th.
You all come....bring your family, friends or neighbors.... our slogan for
the exercise will be "ALERT TODAY - ALIVE TOMORROW ".
Respectfully,
".22:1
