HILL County Director and Chairman Civil Defense & Emergency Planning Texas A&M University Director FRED SANDLIN County Courthouse GEORGE 1. HUEBNER Bryan Director Bryan, Texas 77801 College Station Director 22 June 76 TO: Mr. Jake Cangelose FROM: John W. Gray SUBJECT: CD support for acquisition tower sites for proposed six meter amateur repeater. REFERENCE: ARG letter from J. McCarty to J. Cangelose dated 17 June 76 and conversations between J. Cangelose and J. Gray 18 June 76. Per your request Jake I'm giving you my recommendations concerning J. McCarty's letter to you. The Amateur Radio Group (ARG) has purchased some very high quality equipment for their proposed repeater. It includes the following: 1. A high power transmitter, giving long range communications (as much as 200 miles mobile to mobile) that is all solid state except for the final. 2. A late model solid state reciever. 3. Several base stations. 4. Several solid state mobiles. 5. Several solid state walkie talkies. 6. A 450 mhz control link, solid state. Their investment is a sizable one. Their plan is to put up a high quality, long range repeater, with auto patch for area wide amateur and RACES use. They are seeking two tower sites (they must split the transmitter and reciever) as tall as possible with emergency power available. The two sites they are requesting your support for meet this criteria. Community TV's tower is the tallest in the area and the utility tower is almost as tall. They both have emergency power. In addition the solid state equipment they have lends itself to battery power thus providing an additional back up power capability. Another advantage this repeater has for RACES application is that it uses different tower sites than the repeater RACES is presently using, thus giving us multiple tower sites in the *vent a tornado or other disaster knocked one tower down. Additionally, the choice of 6 meters provides a somewhat longer range capability and it is on a seldom used frequency band which would less likely become conjested in the event of a major disaster. I think for all the above reasons it would be highly advantageous for RACES to support the installation of this repeater system and thus I am urging you to lend whatever support your office can in assisting the ARG in acquiring these sites. As my goal is to help provide you with as much effective auxiliary communications as I can, I will no doubt in the future recommend your support for additional systems I believe can provide CD with this effective commun- ications. Sincerely, ;00Gray cc: ARG, J. McCarty RACES, T. Comstock W P BRAZOS IH cn ;- COUNTY 0 • O • JAKE CANGLOSE OFFICE OF JAMES PRESSWOOD COUNTY DIRECTOR AND CHAIRMAN TEXAS AeN UNIVERSITY DIRECTOR E.E. I have talked to your Civil Defence RACES communications people, and due to the increased range of this repeater over that of existing local repeaters, they think this repeater would be a needed addition to the Civil Defense Communications Plan. We have run into a problem acquiring needed tower space and need your help in the form of a letter from you supporting our repeater, this would be beneficial to our cause. Listed below are the names of the companies the letters need to go to. When the letters are completed, I would appreciate it if you would forward them to me and will enclose them in our engineering proposals to these companies.
