I have found that the majority of our citizens are totally
unaware of a new warning system that is available to each
citizen in our county.
The attached article outlines this system and explains how
it works.
I know this may be difficult to publicize on the air, but
I feel that you can do a tremendous public service to our •
community by publicizing the attached information.
It is not often that I ask for special consideration on
public information, but I feel that due to the impact this
can make in the area of safety for our friends and neighbors
that you will give it "special consideration ".
I sincerely appreciate anything you may be able to do to
get this across to our citizens.
Sincerely yours,
Jake Canglose

LOW COST NOAA EMERGENCY RADIO UNIT BRINGS DISASTOR
AND WEATHER WARNING ALERT SIGNALS IN TO EACH HOME AND OFFICE
THE LOCAL NOAA WEATHER RADIO WHICH WAS INSTALLED JULY 1, OF
LAST YEAR PROVIDES THE LOCAL AREA WITH AN EMERGENCY WARNING
SIGNAL AND EMERGENCY INSTRUCTIONS THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO ALL
CITIZENS WITHIN A 40 MILE RADIUS OF BRYAN - COLLEGE STATION.
THE SYSTEM WORKS IN THE SAME FASHION AS A HOME FIRE DETECTOR
OR FIRE ALERT SYSTEM. THESE RADIOS ARE AVAILABLE FROM LOCAL RADIO
DEALERS RANGING IN PRICE FROM $35.00 - UP DEPENDING ON OPTIONS
AND SENSITIVITY DESIRED.
ANYTIME AN AREA IS THREATENED BY TORNADOES, SEVERE THUNDER-
STORMS, FLASH FLOODS, ENEMY ATTACK, OR A LOCAL DISASTOR REQUIR-
ING EMERGENCY EVACUATION OR INSTRUCTIONS, A CODE SIGNAL IS
TRANSMITTED OVER THE STATION WHICH WILL ACTIVATE A SIREN SOUND
IN RADIOS DESIGNED TO RECEIVE THE ALERT SIGNAL AND EMERGENCY
INSTRUCTIONS.
THE RADIOS ALSO CARRY A 24 HOUR CONTINUOUS LOCAL WEATHER
BROADCAST WHICH IS UPDATED EVERY HOUR.
THE SIREN ALERT SYSTEM IS TESTED BY THE WACO NOAA WEATHER
OFFICE EVERY WEDNESDAY BETWEEN 11 A.M. AND 1 P.M. TO MAKE SURE
THE SYSTEM AND RADIOS DESIGNED TO RECEIVE THESE BROADCASTS
ARE WORKING PROPERLY.
THE STANDBY "ALERT" FEATURE ENABLES THE USER TO PLACE THE
RADIO IN STANDBY OR SILENT MODE BY PRESSING A SWITCH AND ANY-
TIME A WARNING IS ACTIVATED THE "SIREN" WITHIN THE RADIO IS
ACTIVATED. WHEN WEATHER INFORMATION IS DESIRED THE OWNER SIMPLY
DEPRESSES THE CONTROL SWITCH AND RECEIVES CONTINUOUS WEATHER
INFORMATION.
THE SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED BY THE NATIONAL OCEANIC & ATMOSPERIC
ADMINISTRATION TO PROVIDE 90% POPULATION COVERAGE TO I.I.S. CITI-
ZENS FOR WARNINGS OF SEVERE WEATHER, A1' LOCAL OR NATIONAL DIS-
ASTORS.
EVERY HOME, SCHOOL, HOSPITAL, AND BUSINESS PLACE SHOULD
HAVE THIS RADIO UNIT TO RECEIVE EMERGENCY WARNING AND INSTRUC-
TION IN THE SHORTEST TIME POSSIBLE. PERSONS PURCHASING THESE
UNITS SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT THE UNIT HAS THE STANDBY ALERT
FEATURE. AT NIGHT THESE UNITS WILL AW'KEN YOU WHEN THE ALERT
SIGNAL IS TRANSMITTED. IN ADDITION TO THE NOAA RADIO WARNING
SIGNAL, WE WILL ACTIVATE TWO SIRENS, ONE IN DOWNTOWN BRYAN AND
ONE ON THE A &M CAMPUS. THE WARNING WILL ALSO BE CARRIED OVER
ALL LOCAL RADIO AND TV STATIONS WHO ARE COORDINATED WITH AND
ARE PART OF OUR CIVIL DEFENSE WARNING PROGRAM.
