BOX 12276 AUSTIN, TEXAS 78711 (512) 475 -3092 May 25, 1984 Mary Bess Young 3607 Parkway Terrace Bryan, Texas 77801 Dear Mary Bess: We received today the Rock Prairie Schoolhouse and Church marker application, along with the information about the current controversy. While we apreciate the efforts of the Brazos County Historical Commission, our policies prevent us from marking a site without the owners' permission. Since property owner- ship is in dispute, the Texas Historical Commission cannot take action at this time. Should the matter be settled to the satisfaction of both parties involved, and should the rightful owner want to proceed with the application, we would be glad to assist with the project. Under current standards, the sanctuary would not qualify for a building marker (medallion) because of the past alterations, including new windows, added steeple and aluminum siding. It would now only qualify for a subject marker (for the Rock Prairie Baptist Church congregation) which affords no protection for the structure. That is, we would have no authority to review further alterations to the site. We are returning the application and historical documentation until such time as the current controversy is settled.
