400 Walton Drive
Notes on house structure
The house at 400 Walton was built by Marty Karow. It is reddish brick, one-story,
with s attic, and three roof peaks, cottage style. Jane Ann Williams told
us he brought in the quarter- round oak mantel from an old house in Marlin. Marry was
back field coach, and head baseballcoach for TAMC in 1941, the year the house was
built. (The year before, he was also head golf coach, and in 1942 he was also head
basketball coach. The man got around.) Karow came to A&M as mn All-American
fullback from Ohio state, part of Homer 's football team that took the
national championship in 1939. After taking military leave, he returned to A&M in 1945,
a lieutenant commander in the navy. He returned to Ohio in the sixties. Marry Karow
was voted into the 1967 College Baseball HallofFame. This information was given to
me by long-time Nita Smith, wife of Coach Smith, and is documented
in The 30th Commemorative Album, published by L.G. Balfour Co. and
Taylor Publishing Co., Dallas.

Ed and Jane Williams were outgoing and visible members of the community, teaching
Sunday School and A&M Pre church and the childrens' school
activities. According to Deliah Fleming, Jane was a mover in the Social Club, a huge organization
open to women in families of professors. Ed was askilled wood worker. His daughter Jane Ann
showed us the tea table in the living room that he made for Jane as a wedding present. It still sits
there.
