YOUTH SPONSOR SUCCESSFUL TAP DRIVE: WORK ON OTHER COMMUNITY PROJECTS.
Outstanding example of the high - schooler's participation in community work is the "Teens Against
Polio" organization. This year more than $2000.00 was raised by this group for the March of Dimes.
An Aand M Consolidated student, Patricia Jackson, was the Brazos County Chairman. The teens sold
"Peanuts for Polio ', had a talent show, made collections at the basketball games, had a toll road, and
sponsored a dance. One Saturday the managers of WTAW in Bryan turned the radio station over to the
young people to make money any way they could.
Another community project
has been the Negro Community
Nursery. One group of high
school students took orange
juice to the children once a
.. week, with cookies on special
days. Some students bought
6 ` a Christmas tree, decorated
it, and put presents under it.
^ Others got school supplies for
., the children, such as crayons,
•
paper, and scissors.
