HomeMy WebLinkAbout05 PH Progress Report 05.31.2006 PROJECT HOLD PROGRESS REPORT Anne Boykin Heritage Coordinator Neighborhood Services May 1— May 31, 2006 • Acquisitions — 10 files resulting in 92 pages scanned • Texas Historic Commission Conference documents and photographs • Texas Historic Commission Medallion magazine featuring WWII • Brazos Valley Heroes articles • A list of Brazos County Postmasters from 1846 — 1930 has been submitted to us by Jerry Cooper. It will be scanned in next week. Brides of the Brazos Exhibit • Still up and running!. Brochures • The brochures are back on the drawing board. Katie has asked for a re- design. Connections • Dr. Kevin "Casey" Motl — PhD, History, Texas A &M Colleen Risinger, volunteers Mary Hamlin and Ruth Bramson, and I attended Dr. Motl's lecture on the Suffragette Movement in Brazos County. Dr. Motl is a dynamic speaker and a good candidate for our History Lunch Lecture Series. Tentatively, he will be available for us in January. He will be sending a packet of documents and photographs for us to scan in to Project HOLD. • Mark Beal from Channel 19 asked me to provide some photographs for the live - streaming video of the "Traditions" Explore lecture. Historic Preservation Committee (HPC) • Heritage Hunt was small with only a few participants. I prefer to consider it a dress rehearsal for a later date in the Fall. We still have the toys and the passports. A minor date change in the passport will make is reusable for any time. • The Project HOLD office has taken on a new look thanks to the efforts of my brother, Thomas Boykin, who hung new shelves for me. The new design will be better suited to rearranging the displays as well as taking some of the displays to offsite presentations. A WWII display has been added to the office as well. Laserfiche • I spoke at length with Casey Skelton who continues to give us tremendous support with Laserfiche. We discussed a few changes that she will make in the coming weeks. The search parameters will be altered to be more user friendly. We are also planning a home page that will come up before the actual Project HOLD files. Oral History Interviews • The Oral History interviews have been on hold awaiting the transcriptions from Anne Triche- Steen. We have been hampered by having only one cassette tape recorder. Mary Hamlin is working on learning to use the i -Rock digital recorder. This handy device will allow us to record the interviews and put the files directly into Project HOLD. Viewers of the web site will be able to open up these wave files and listen to them in their entirety if they have the necessary software on their computers. Katie and I discussed the mini - biographies as well. Project HOLD Moment in History • The May issue of PH Moment in History has been very well received. I plan to continue these monthly issues as an educational and PR tool for our website. Texas in WWII • We did not win the last competition I submitted through Becky Nugent and Public Communications. However, I have submitted "Texas in WWII" for the Texas Municipal League Spirit Award. Keep you fingers crossed! Volunteers • The Points of Light Foundation Presidential Service Awards were presented at the May Explore Luncheon. • Ruth Bramson continues to work on clipping articles out of the local newspapers for scanning in to Project HOLD. • Ruth has finished working on a transcription of the 1868 Millican riot document. I will scan it in next month.
