I. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 5:18 p.m. by Bill Lancaster, Chairman.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes for 11/6/96 were approved as written.
3. HEAR VISITORS: Joey Dunn, with the City Planning Department was present, along with Carlos
Ordonez, Gus Roman and Lee Battle, to give a presentation on the Southside Historic Area Resource
Study. Mike Luther was also present.
4. REVIEW AND DISCUSSION OF HISTORIC HOME APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED: The
application for 502 W. Dexter, submitted by the owners Dock and Karen Burke, was reviewed. The
Historic Preservation Committee (HPC) decided that it would like to receive more information from
the Burkes about the home before it was approved. Not because the home wouldn't qualify for a
marker, but for documentation purposes.
5. PRESENTATION OF SOUTHSIDE HISTORICAL AREA RESOURCE STUDY - Joey Dunn,
Staff Planner, Development Services: Joey gave his presentation on the Southside Historical Area
Resource Study. Copies of some of the materials Joey used during his slide presentation are attached.
After Joey's presentation there was brief discussion, and it was agreed that the resource study was an
excellent tool that could be built on and used by the HPC.
It was stated that, depending on the amount of renovations made, some homes in Southside could
qualify for state or national markers as well as city markers. The HPC agreed that it couldn't tell the
homeowner to apply for a state or national marker. Especially since the state and national markers

limit the homeowners' ability to renovate and make changes to the home, however the HPC agreed
that it could make suggestions to the homeowners who might qualify. It was decided by the HPC
that copies of the state and national marker applications should be sent out with the city marker
application. This would give the owner all the different options on how far they could take the
historic process with their home.
6. OTHER COMMITTEE CONCERNS: The HPC discussed the January meeting, and decided that
because of the holidays it should be moved to the second Wednesday of the month -- January 8,
1997.
There was a brief discussion about the Southside historic signs. It was suggested that when the
period lighting was installed, the signs be removed from the poles they were on and hung from the
lamps.
There was discussion on the Historic Preservation's Internet home page. Pam said she would copy
the information off the Internet and include it in the next packet.
David asked the members if they liked meeting at the Conference Center or if they wanted to move
the meeting back to the Central Park office. All members agreed the Conference Center was more
convenient. It was decided that the meetings would be held at the Conference Center from here on
out.
7. ADJOURN: The meeting adjourned at 6:19 p.m.
