RE: Items of Interest for May, 1996
1. Our May committee meeting will include taking a tour of the George Bush
Presidential Library Collection. We will met at the location where the items are
currently being housed, 701 East University Drive, Suite 300. This is in the old
Chimney Hill Bowling Alley at the intersection of University Drive and Tan
across the street from the Golden Corral Restaurant. We will assemble at 5:15 p.m.,
on Wednesday, May 1, 1996 in their lobby, and the tour will take about one hour.
Then, we will proceed to the College Station Conference Center for the remainder of
our meeting and a bite to eat. This will be our last meeting until fall and we have
several items to make decisions on.
2. We have received an application for the Luther Jones house, and I would like to vote
on this at our next meeting. Therefore, if approved, the plaque can be presented at
one of the May City Council meetings. A copy of the application is enclosed with
this packet so that you may review it prior to the May 1 meeting.
3. The most recent interviews with our Oral History Program were done on Tuesday,
April 16, 1996 at the Conference Center. The topic was "Early Transportation in
Our Area ", and we had a great turnout. Five groups were interviewed and many
stories and recollections were recorded. The next step will be to transcribe the tapes
and have the interviewee proof the text for accuracy. We are already looking at the
Fall of '96 for the next "Memory Lane" event. If you are interested in helping, please
call Gracie Colbert at the Conference Center at 764 -3720.
4. All of you are invited to attend Mayor Ringer's Retirement Party on the evening of
May 17, 1996, at Central Park. This will be a community event, and will celebrate
his many years of public service.
5. For those of you that are at the end of your two year term on the our committee,
(Gary Halter, Sharon Menn, Carol Wagner, and Steve Smith) it is time to submit an
application to the City Council Office for re- appointment to the committee if you so
desire. You should have received a letter and an application from the City Council
Office already. This must be turned in by the first week of May.
