I. CALL TO ORDER: There was no quorum. There were guests present however, so an informal
meeting was held beginning at 7:00 p.m.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: David stated that the minutes would have to be approved at the next
meeting, due to lack of a quorum.
III. REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS FOR HISTORIC HOMES /BUILDINGS: There were no new
applications to review for either buildings or homes. Bill said he knew of one application which
would be turned in soon.
IV. PRESENTATION OF NORTHGATE HISTORIC RESOURCES SURVEY: Joey Dunn and Todd
McDaniel were present to give a presentation on the comprehensive survey of NORTHGATE
HISTORIC RESOURCES which had been completed in March, 1995. Joey explained that the survey
contained specific, vital information on the buildings in Northgate and that it would be turned over to
HOK, the firm doing the master plan for Northgate. NORTHGATE HISTORIC RESOURCES
reference guides were handed out and a slide presentation was presented. Joey explained the
historic sites inventory forms and inventory list in the reference manual. He told the members that as
they read through the inventories, if they knew of any factual information that could be added to the
forms, to fill it in and let him know. Joey explained that the inventories were a database of
information which would be updated on an ongoing basis. He said he would also like to read
through the Northgate oral history transcripts to see if there were any specific buildings mentioned,
and if so, incorporate that information into the inventories.
Todd told the members he felt confident that HOK would come back with a recommendation to
either create some type of historical district designation, or an overlay district for the Northgate area.
The committee was told that the first of four community meetings to be held with HOK, would be
May 31, 1995, at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.

V. VIEW OLD PHOTOGRAPHS AND FILM OF SOUTHSIDE: David had photographs for the
members to look at which were reproduced from originals brought to the Northgate and Southside
Memory Lanes projects. These were passed around, and a brief film was shown which had been
reproduced from about six reels of home movies made in 1940 and 1941. The film was brought to
the Southside oral history meeting by Ed Madeley. The film showed Madeley's Pharmacy which was
located on Southside, as well as some scenes of early College Station and TAMU campus.
VI. BRAINSTORM IDEAS FOR A SOUTHSIDE GATEWAY INTO COMMUNITY: Several ideas were
discussed including: incorporating the unusual round portholes on the side of Rother's Bookstore into
some type of gateway; a tower with either an arrow, sundial, compass, or weather vane on top;
brick fences or columns with wrought iron on the street corners; period lighting; or, a distinctive
lettering style on the street signs in that area.
Bill Fox stated that at the last City Council meeting he got the council to approve adding a Southside
entry, or some type of recognition for Southside, to Council Issue #5. He said he wasn't sure what
the exact wording would be. He told the Committee that they needed to come up with a project for
some type of entry treatment off of George Bush going into the neighborhood, which could be
submitted to City Council for approval.
Greg stated that he felt the focal point of Southside was the strip center where Rother's Bookstore
and the Subway Sandwich Shop were located.
VII. OTHER COMMITTEE CONCERNS: David stated that Florace Kling's term on the Committee had
expired and that she wouldn't be renewing. He also told the members that Greg Keith would be
graduating in August and therefore, was resigning from the Committee. David told Greg that the
Committee would like to have someone from the Old Main Society (preferably the person taking
Greg's place as Society Chairman) hold a permanent seat on the Committee. The idea had been
discussed with the City Secretary, Connie Hooks, and she had told David that there would not be a
problem with that. Greg stated that he had really enjoyed his time on the Committee, and Bill told
him he had made great contributions. Bill thanked both Greg and Florace for their time and
dedication.
David said that the Commiffee would not be meeting during the summer. He stated that he would
like to have a social in September when the Commiffee meets again, to say good -bye to the
outgoing members and to welcome incoming members.
The agenda for the meeting /social in September will be mailed to the Committee in August.
