PROJECT HOLD VOLUNTEERS EARN SERVICE AWARDS
Awarded by Presidents Volunteer Service Awards
COLLEGE STATION, TX- Three dedicated volunteers for the City of College Station's Project
HOLD program will receive the PRESIDENT'S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD at the Exploring
History Lunch Lecture Series, Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. The presentation will
take place just prior to the lecture at the College Station Conference Center.
Project HOLD is the City of College Station's historic online library database. City staff and
volunteers work under the guidance of the Historic Preservation Committee to educate the
community in our local history and preserve it for future generations.
Alyson Sanders, who will graduate cum laude from Sam Houston State University, has been
with Project HOLD for two years, first as a volunteer and most recently, as an intern. Ms.
Sanders will receive her second pin, a silver, and certificate signifying her contribution of well
over 250 hours during 2007. She will leave the Project HOLD program after graduation this
May. She has been awarded a full scholarship to pursue a Master of History degree at Angelo
State University in San Angelo, Texas.
Colleen Risinger, has been with Project HOLD since its beginning in August of 2003. She is
receiving her third pin, a bronze, and a certificate signifying her contribution of over 100 hours
during 2007. Ms. Risinger trained Anne Boykin when she first volunteered for Project HOLD in
March of 2005. Ms. Risinger also serves on the Historic Preservation Committee and the Senior
Advisory Committee for the City of College Station.
Rosemary Boykin, Anne's mother, is receiving a bronze pin and certificate signifying her
contribution of over 100 hours during 2007. Mrs. Boykin has volunteered her time from home
clipping historical articles from newspapers for inclusion in the Project HOLD files. Mrs.
Boykin, a past member of the Brazos County Historical Commission and published author of
books on Italian history of Brazos County, has been a great source of inspiration and guidance to
Anne.
The PRESIDENT'S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD is a national program recognizing Americans
who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service. Established in 2003, the
AWARD was created by President George W. Bush to give Presidential recognition to individuals,
families and groups who meet requirements for volunteer service, measured by the number of
service hours performed over 12- months.
Project HOLD is one of thousands of organizations that have joined forces to deliver the
PRESIDENT'S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD and honor the volunteers who strengthen our Nation.
As a Certifying Organization for the AWARD, Project HOLD is responsible for verifying service
hours, nominating potential recipients and delivering the AWARD.
"We are extremely proud to recognize our most outstanding volunteers with the PRESIDENT'S
VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD," said Anne Boykin, Heritage Programs Assistant and Project
HOLD manager, "volunteers are role models in our community, donating their time, energy and
talent to preserve our area history. The AWARD is our way of thanking these volunteers and
inspiring everyone in our community to make volunteering and historic preservation a central
part of their lives."
"Even if you've never volunteered before, the PRESIDENT'S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD is
within your reach," Boykin said. "There are so many ways to contribute, and every volunteer
hour makes a difference in improving the quality of life for others."
The AWARD is issued by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, a group
convened by President George W. Bush to help foster and encourage a culture of volunteer
service and civic participation among Americans through the Points of Light Foundation.
Chaired by two -time Super Bowl Champion Darrell Green, with former U.S. Senators Bob Dole
and John Glenn as honorary co- chairs, the Council is composed of leaders in government, media,
entertainment, business, education, nonprofit and volunteer service organizations and community
volunteering.
