Call to order by the Chair Chairman, Charles Schultz, called the meeting to order at 7:04PM. Members present: Barbara Althaus, Colleen Batchelor, Arne Boykin, Shawn Carlson, Ray George, Bill Page, Tom Lynch, H enry Mayo, N ancy Schwart and Nancy Tiner. 2. Introduction of guests Susan Irza was attending as aguest; Charles Schultz noted that her appointment to the Curnmission has been approved and will be effective as soon as she receives notification by msil. 4. Approval of rninutet dT the January 14, 2007 meeting Colleen Batchelor moved that the January minutes be approved; Ray George seconded and the minutes were approved. Corrections to the November minutes were discussed and Colleen moved that those minutes also be approved; Barbara Althaus seconded the motion and the minutes were approved with the following changes: (1) In paragraph 7, it should read, "Althaus reported that Nancy Tiner is planning the Isom Palmer marker dedication. She will coordinate that information with John Blair;" (2) in paragraph 9, the first paragraph should read, "D ue to time constraints with the upcoming H istorical Marker application deadline, Schultz asked the commission's authorization to send forward the following applications to the state:..." 5. Unfinished business A. Providence M issionary Baptist Church memorial park ceremony The dedication will be on April 21' at 1 PM. Henry Mayo said that he would send a PDF of the program to BCHC members. B. Historical marker for Isom Palmer (1811 -1874) in Bryan City Cemetery N ancy Tiner suggested May 3r for the dedication ceremony. Ray George recommended running the date by Bob H olmes at the cemetery before finalizing that date. Nancy said she would check with him. C. BC HC information on Brazos County WEB site Colleen Batchelor presented a report on visitation to the website. A few of the statistics are: (1) during the 4 -month period from October 2007 to February 2008, there were 1,274 visits to the site; 84% of those people were first time visitors; (2) within Texas, 50% of the visits carm from Bryan, followed by Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Dallas; (3) nationally, 76% of the visits were from Texas followed by California, New York and Florida; and (4)nationally, 96% of visits were from the U .S. followed by U.K., Canada, Italy and Japan. Colleen said she would get a copy of the report for Charles tc include in the annual report that is due February 28 D. Reliance Cemetery Marker The marker applicants are working on additional text for the marker. F. Steep Hollow Cemetery Historical Cemetery designation Preparation of the Steep H ollowcernetery marker is still in progress. 6. New Business A. Archaeology Committee re port Tom Lynch reported that at the annual meeting of the Brazos H eritage Society, on Saturday, February 23r at 10AM, H enry Mayo will be speaking about the Booneville site. The meeting will be held at the Brazos Center. B. Education Committee report Susan Irza reported on the Brazos Valley Regional History Fair held at Washington -on- the- Brazos on February 8th. Susan was the judge for all Brazos County submissions and — selected the two winners of the award provided by the Brazos County H istorical Commission. For the junior award, Jessilyn Welch prepared an exhibit on Mammoth Cave; for the senior award. Lstoya Crenshaw prepared an exhibit on desegregation of the Bryan schools. Because Latoya's project was about the history of Brazos County, she received an additional $50 for her award. Charles will have the $50 check prepared and sent to the Star of the Republic Museum. C. Historical Markers and Research Comm ittee report Bill Page had nothing to report forthis committee. Anne Boykin noted that the City of College Station recently approved city historical markers for the Washington Baptist Chapel and the Loupot horre. D. Correspondence of the Chair Charles Schultz reported that there has been no correspondence. E. Reward of $100 for return ofthe Brazos River Marker H enry Mayo noted that Channel 40 reported on the missing markers. Colleen recommended that this item be taken off next month's agenda. F. Other New Business There was no new business reported. Colleen reported that the Brazos Heritage Society had received the reprints of Margaret van Bavel's book on Boonville and was providing each BCHC member with a copy, which she distributed. She noted that the printing information is wrong, i.e., it still says" First printing," rather than "Second printing." G. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 8:10PM. Shawn B. Carlson Secretary 2
