P A G E 2 HER i T A G E B R AZ OS v- OUR CHRISTMAS TEA I' FIT THEM TO A "TEA " Letter to the Eagle Wednesday, December 5, 2007 We delighted in the Victorian Christmas Tea created Saturday afternoon by the Brazos Heritage Society. The setting was the elegance of the stately early -20th century Astin Mansion. We found the fine linen and china, long- gowned hostess, waitresses and string ensemble charmingly appropriate for the steaming pots of teas accompanying the menu of savories, pastries and sweets, such as scones with clotted cream and jam. Thank you, Brazos Heritage Society, for a tasteful remembrance of times past. — Dorothy and Paul Van Riper f vi 1 P A G E 3 H E R I T A G E B R A Z O S H E R I T A G E PARK MASTER PLAN The Brazos Heritage Society is embarking upon a co- operative venture with the City of Bryan to develop a master plan for Heritage Park in Bryan. The goal of this effort is to provide a 50 -year plan for the park that will ensure its continued viability as an attractive historic site and community asset. The landscape designer who will develop the plan has a degree in landscape architecture from TAMU, as well as a certificate in Historic Preservation, thus making her quite well- suited to this task. A high priority for all involved is the planting of hardy new canopy trees to replace those lost to drought and age over the last few years, and to create additional shaded areas. No major changes are envisioned, rather the master plan is viewed as a tool and guide for the future. l r a n if fr:: C A R N E G I E ECHOES By NANCY R o s s We are amazed at the number of people who visit the Carnegie and have marvelous memories of children's story time. Some keep coming back because they are genealogists or interested in local history. Others visit us when they come back for school reunions. Memories like that are so very valuable to us and to their families. Are you passing on childhood memories to your loved ones? It gives us all a sense of place and a sense of worth. If you haven't, start soon! Do you remember stories told to you by older members of your family? Have they been passed on, or do they languish in your memory, rusting and fading? At the very least, pass them on. Better yet, write them down and pass copies to others! Don't have or remem- ber any stories? Talk to the older members of your family about their childhood, their parents and friends, their schools and games. Anything they want to talk about is a piece of history that, unless passed on, dies when they die. My mother told me the story of her family's move from Missouri to South Texas on the train. Her mother cried the whole way, saying they were going to be scalped, and that nobody would be able to speak English! This was in 1911! A funny, loving story that I will always remember not only because it was a family story, but also because it points out how we often view other areas and people, and how wrong we can be. Remember! Pass on those memories! Nancy McCraw Ross Carnegie Librarian ' • t4's.i$2ii. J YD D s oo.oi $ R A 02/15/21; R: W.;11 1; r. - - — _ -.
