Historical Perspective
The United Daughters of the Confederacy is the
outgrowth of two statewide organizations that came t
into existence as early as 1890: the Daughters of the
Confederacy in Missouri and the Ladies' Auxiliary of
the Confederate Soldiers Home in Tennessee. The }
UDC was organized on September 10, 1894, in
Nashville, Tennessee, to honor the memory of those "
\N ho served and those who tell in the service of the
Confederate States of America. The name United
Daughters of the Confederacy pays tribute to Varma
Anne ("Winnie") Davis, youngest daughter of Jefferson . 6'1
<< i
and Varina Howell Davis. Mrs. Caroline Meriwether
Goodlett of Tennessee was the UDC founder and Mrs.
Anna Davenport Raines of Georgia was co-founder.
Today's UDC members continue the ifnportant mission
of honoring., protecting, and preserving their
Confederate heritage to ensure that the noble sacrifices
made by their ancestors during the War Between the
States are not forgotten.
