IN THE BEGINNING
Excerpts from diary kept by Father Frank D. Urbanovsky, the
first pastor of Santa Teresa, known to his flock as "Padre
Francisco" and "Padre Panchito".
1929
took up my duties on November 8, 1929, as assistant to
Monsignor Gleissner. I soon found out that there were many
Mexicans in and around Bryan. In fact there were many more
Mexican baptisms at the St. Joseph's Church, than of all
nationalities.
thought I knew a little Spanish, but I could not understand
them and couldn't make them understand me. Decided to
learn the language well, and with the permission of the
Bishop, give all my time to the Mexican people. '
i
1932-1933
spent some time with the Franciscan Fathers in Hebbronville,
Texas (They are exiles from Mex-ico.) to perfect myself a
little better in the language and learn the Mexican customs
and habits.
r Began to spend three to four days 'a week traveling over the
plantations and organizing the people there are about
20 such colonies. Some of the places where I have made
t1 arrangements to hold services: Brazos Varisco farm, Steele
Store School, Mumford, Nicholas, Hearne, Valley Junction,
Goodland, Calvert, Black Bridge, Boone's Prairie, Allen
Farm, College Station
1934

put up my tent (named Espiritu Santo) in back of Griffins
Black Smith Shop (two city blocks northwest of the Post
Offices). There were three baptisms, two marriages fixed
up, 12 first communions.

FOLLOWING APPEARED IN BRYAN DAILY EAGLE - SFPTF.MREP 2, 1947
Santa Teresa Catholic Church for Mexicans has a resident
pastor, it was announced today. The Rev. Joseph Pacovi, a
member of the Franciscan Order who was formerly stationed at
Wichita Falls, has been appointed by his superior to take
charge of the Spanish-speaking people of Brazos county.
His appointment brings the total of resident priests in
Bryan to seven, whereas 50 years ago there was but one priest
and one church in Brazos county
until a residence is built, he will make his home at St.
Joseph's rectory. In the mornings, afternoons and evenings
he will be in his office at Santa Teresa church. Masses will
be held daily at 7 o'clock during the week, while on, Wednesday
and Friday at 7 O'clock there will be evening devotion and
NI"
benediction. Sunday mass and sermon will be at 8:30 o'clock
and mass at 10 o'clock.
SUMMARY OF ARTICLE APPEARING IN BRYAN'EAGLE - MARCH 24, 1978
The Rev. William Buades spent 30 years at Santa Teresa
Church inspiring parishoners with_his love for God,
eagerness for life, and enthusiasm for all that is good.
He is described as an educator, a third parent, and a
member of the Family by those who know•him.
To Father Buades the family is of utmost importance.
His own family lived in Mallorca, the largest of the -
Balearic Islands in the Western Mediterranean. Father
Buades came to Texas in 1937 arriving in Waco where he._:
served for 10 years. He came to Bryan in 1949 and
succeeded Rev. Francis D. Urbanovsky. During his 30 years
in Bryan the parish built a church which was dedicated
March 28, 1954, and a rectory. The parish later acquired
approximately one acre of land across the street, the area
to be used as the site of a new church building.
A parishoner once said of Father William, "he is
several notches above most men and awful close to
Sainthood." Few would disagree to this as most believe
that during his 30 years as pastor of Santa Teresa, he
worked to bring heaven on earth.

To the People of God of Santa Teresa's Paris in Bryan
Dearly Beloved:
/I • L
~ Nearly forty years ago when Monsignor Frank
• Urbanovsky, "Padre Panchi.to", began his ministry to the
little Spanish speaking community in Bryan, he must have
prayed and hoped for the day when that community of
• faithful people would have a fine parish church. And
for thirty years Padre Guillermo Buades dedicated all
• his thoughts and all his energies to the building of
nt the community of Santa Teresa. That he was successful
in doing so is proved by the fact that the people of
lizeln • Santa Teresa's were ready to build the church when
ood„ Father Tom Frank came on the scene.
DAYS P And so on this happy day of dedication I join with
you in thanking the dedicated, priests who have served
9pm
you, and I with them offer you my heartfelt congratulations.
RSTYDR. - You have accomplished what just a few years ago I thought
846-0513 • impossible. And now for the honor and glory of God and
the spiritual welfare of the community you have one of the
most beautiful and one of the finest churches in Central
Texas. May the prayers of your patroness, Santa Teresa,
obtain many blessings for you and for the generations who
will follow you in this lovely parish.

SANTUARIO DE
Santa Teresa
1212 Luckyl
Bryan, Texas 77801!
concedcrles sus bendiciones y gracias to mas favorecidas.
