Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939 started what was soon recognized as a second World War. Europe became the early theater of conflict; and the fighting rapidly spread over the deserts
and jungles of Africa. In Asia, the battle spread to Syria, Iraq, and Iran. It drew into battle the young men of Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The war between Japan and China,
in progress since 1937, became part of the larger conflict. Then 7 December 1941, Japan drew in the United States.
