Today the San Jacinto Battleground State Historical Site covers over 1,200 acres of rolling green meadowland and is home to the Battleship TEXAS and the San Jacinto Monument and San Jacinto Museum of History. Visitors can also enjoy picnic areas, historical markers, and nature trails shaded by moss- covered live oaks. The Park is open daily. Battleship Texas The Battleship TEXAS, commissioned in 1914, is the only surviving battleship to have served in both world wars and is the last surviving Dreadnought. The TEXAS served as flagship for the D -Day invasion of Normandy and earned seven ribbons for her service during World War II. Come aboard and experience what life was like for thousands of American sailors and Marines. The Battleship is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Kids 12 years and under are admitted free of charge. The San Jacinto Monument and Museum Rising 567 feet above the Battleground, the San Jacinto Monument honors all those who fought for Texas independence. Built for the battle's centennial in 1936, the Monument remains the world's tallest memorial tower. The San Jacinto Museum of History, located in the base of the Monument, tells the exciting story of the battle and introduces visitors to over 400 years of history. The Monument and Museum are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Both are closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Museum admission is FREE. There is a nominal charge to visit the 489 foot high observation deck and to view the internationally acclaimed Texas Forever! t The Battle of San Jacinto.
