Receive us all, though prodigal and wandering, as children of your making. With thanksgiving to you, we remember our sister, Shirley. Comfort our hearts with the joyful remembrance of the faith her life revealed; and as we mourn, sustain us by the mercy which you bear for all your people. Gather our sorrow into the heart of your compassion and at the last, bring us also to the joy of your heavenly glory where we may behold you face to face; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen The congregation is seated WORDS OF WELCOME Pastor Steve Rieke FAMILY REMEMBRANCES Kalynn White, Kyle White, Bryan Roper, Dr. Robert White 1 HYMN "WHEN PEACE LIKE A RIVER" 1. When peace, like a river, 2. He lives, oh, the bliss attendeth my way; of this glorious thought; when sorrows, like sea billows, roll; my sin, not in part, but the whole, Whatever my lot, is nailed to his cross, Thou halt taught me to say, and I bear it no more. It is well, it is well Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, with my soul. oh, my soul. 3. And, Lord, haste the day when our faith shall be sight. The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, the trumpet shall sound, and the Lord shall descend; Even so, it is well with my soul. THE WORD READING Colossians 3:12-14 As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. PSALM 118 Selected O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, "His steadfast love endures forever," and let all who fear the Lord say, "His steadfast love endures forever." In my distress I called to the Lord; He answered me and set me free. The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid. It is He who helps me, who has become my strength and my might. He has become my salvation; I shall not die, but live and recount the deeds of the Lord. The Lord laid burdens upon me, but did not give me over to death. Open to me the gates of your dwelling; that I may go in and give thanks to the Lord! This is the gate of the Lord, let the righteous enter it. I thank you that you have answered me and become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord's doing and it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Blessed is the one who comes in the naive of the Lord. You are my God; I give thanks to you and praise. O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His steadfast love endures forever. READING II Corinthians 3:3-18 If the gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who have been blinded by the god of this world. For what we preach is Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. The One who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," is He who has shined in our hearts, giving light to the knowledge of God through Christ. For we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that power belongs to God and not to us. So when we are afflicted, we are not crushed; when perplexed, not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed. For we always carry the death of Jesus in our bodies, that the life of Jesus may also be manifest in us. And all this is for your sake, that as grace extends, it may increase in thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed. Truly this momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, because we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are fleeting, but the things that are unseen are eternal. SPECIAL MUSIC "I CAN ONLY IMAGINE" Lori Roper READING I Corinthians 15:12-20 Now if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then truly Christ has not been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is empty and your faith is in vain. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we of all people are most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by one came death, so by Christ has come also the resurrection of the dead. SERMON Pastor Steve Rieke CONGREGATIONAL HYNIN "BLESSED ASSURANCE" 1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! 2. Perfect submission, perfect delight, O, what a foretaste of glory divine! visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Heir of salvation, purchase of God, angels descending bring from above Born of his Spirit, washed in his blood. echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Refrain, next page Refrain, next page 3. Perfect submission, all is at rest; I in my Savior am happy and blest, Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with his goodness, lost in his love. Refrain Refrain This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. CONFESSION OF FAITH C: I believe that Jesus Christ, true God begotten of the Father from before all worlds, and also true Man, born of the virgin Mary is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature; bought me and freed me from sin, death, and the power of the devil; not with silver and gold, but with his holy, precious blood, and innocent suffering and death that I might be His own, live under Him in his kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness. Even as He is risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. Shirley White, 71, of College Station died Tuesday, April 21, after a lengthy illness. Throughout her life, Shirley was a spiritual inspiration to family and friends. As a long-time member of Peace Lutheran Church, she was involved in many Bible studies and church activities. Along with gardening, Shirley's favorite pastime was spending time and sharing with family and friends. Shirley had the ability to share love with everyone she encountered. She could make each person feel that they were the most important person in her life at the time, and she always had a kind word and genuine smile for even the casual acquaintance. Her faith in God served as a beacon for all she knew, and our lives were enriched by knowing her. The family would like to especially thank Shirley's sister, Sharon Finch, who has been by her side tirelessly through her illness and hospital stay. Special thanks also to all the health care providers who administered such loving care to Shirley. So many doctors, nurses and other health care specialists touched not only Shirley's life, but the lives of our immediate family. We want to especially thank the nurses at St Joseph's Oncology Floor, ER room and the nurses at the Long Term Acute Care facility at Christus Dubuis. Special recognition goes to Lynn Harkey, RN, "our running angel," Shandolyn Fortner, RN, Kathleen Mynar, RN, Amber Reed, RN, Julie Nelson, RN, Lacy Genovese, RN and Patricia Rogers, RN. Your compassion and love, not only to mom, but to our family will never be forgotten. You are all very special. Shirley was born in April 1, 1938 in Kerrville, Texas. She graduated from Tivy High School in 1956 the same year she married Ben O. White, Jr., College Station's current Mayor. Shirley and Ben celebrated their 531d wedding anniversary on January 21Si of this year. Shirley was a devoted wife and mother and truly adored and cherished her husband, children and grandchildren. In addition to Mayor White, she is survived by her daughter Debbie Roper and son-in-law Kerry Roper from Houston, and son Kelly White from Austin. Her precious grandchildren Amy Maginness and her husband Capt. Mike Maginness in Shreveport, LA; Bryan Roper from Houston; Kyle White from College Station and Kalynn White from Austin. She is also survived by her sister Sharon Finch from Austin, and brother Charles Arnecke and his wife Kaye, from Garden Ridge. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bryan Roper, Kyle White and Capt. Mike Maginness. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Peace Lutheran Church or Brazos Valley Parkinson Association.
