HomeMy WebLinkAboutCouncil & Mayor Reunion; newspaper article (10-16-2008)"Seventy Years of Leadership," a reunion of mayors and council members, was celebrated Oct. 16 at College Station's first city hall, now Cafe Eccel, at 101 Church St. The event, organized by Anne Boykin, Heritage Programs, was hosted by the Historic Preservation Committee, Project HOLD; Cafe Eccel and members of the Department of Parks and Recreation. In attendance were: former mayors Gary Halter, Larry Ringer, Lynn Mcllhaney and Ron Silvia, and Mayor Ben White. Former council members present included: Homer Adams, Bill Cooley, Pat Boughton, David Hickson, Dick Birdwell, John Happ, Chris Scotti, Nancy Crouch and Sandra Runnels, representing her late husband, Robert. Representing the current city council were: White, Dennis Maloney, Larry Stewart and Mcllhaney. White, City Manager Glenn Brown and Superintendent of Special Facilities David Gerling made the opening remarks, followed by Boughton. The reunion was the first such gathering for the city. On Oct. 19, 1938, by a vote of 217 to 39, the community voted to incorporate. The election was held at the train depot west of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, then on Wellborn Road. Children recently participated in a birthday card contest for the city. The cards are displayed at the College Station Conference Center. Winners will be selected and prizes given in November. An exhibit, "Honoring Our Mayors," will open at the Conference Center in December.
