Cartwheel Prairie was located in central Brazos County, near the
community of Harvey. It was not so much a community as just a place
name used to indicate where settlers lived. Based on the names of
persons living there, it may have been near the small community of
Coleview. The source of its name is not known. Early Brazos County
contained numerous prairies amidst scattered patches of woodland, as
well as various trails, creeks and the occasional hill.
The gin house of Bob Turk, a Negro, living near Cartwheel Prairie,
Brazos County, was destroyed by fire last week. Two Negro boys, aged
respectively 11 and 13, were arrested for setting it on fire; they plead
guilty and say that a gentleman living on the prairie hired them to burn
it. Brenham Daily Banner, 2 September 1883, page 2
