HomeMy WebLinkAboutLalk, Margaret U.Margaret (or Margi, as everyone calls her) Lalk has spent much of
her professional and private life protecting and advocating for children
in crisis, and our community is better for her work. She was born at
Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, but grew up in the Midwest, gradu-
ating from Iowa Ciry High School. She then headed to the University
of Wisconsin at Madison, graduating in 1969.
Margi returned to Texas in 1976, settling in College Station with
her two children Kathryn and Geoff. She decided on a career in law,
and went to the University of Texas law school (commuting back and
forth-no easy task) where she earned her J.D. in 1980. After a brief
stint in private practice, Margi became an assistant district attorney for
Brazos County in 1982. She represents Child Protective Services and
prosecutes criminal cases involving child abuse and neglect.
Because of her work-and her personal passion for the welfare of
children-Margi has been involved with many organizations that help
children and young people. She's served on the boards of the Blue-
bonnet Girl Scout Council, the Children's Museum, and St. Michael's
Academy. She's also actively involved with Scotty's House, the local
Child Advocacy Center, and Voices for Children, the Brazos County
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program. In 2002, Margi
received CASA's "Champion for Children" award in recognition of her
years of dedicated service to abused and neglected children.
A member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Margi also finds time
to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and Hospice Brazos Valley.
Margi's family now includes Kathryn's daughter, Julie and her
mother Kay Johnson. Her best advice to young women would be to
nurture relationships with caring, encouraging friends. Those rela-
tionships sustain us in tough times and cheer us in good times - we
truly do "get by with a little help from our friends."
