HomeMy WebLinkAboutBlue-McClendon, AliceAlthough her professional life centers around animals, Alice Blue-
McLendon's abiding passion is for children, especially those suffering from
abuse and neglect. That passion found expression when Alice helped found
Voices for Children, Inc, the Brazos County chapter of Court Appointed
Special Advocates (CASA), volunteers who advocate in court for abused and
neglected children. Alice and her husband Gary adopted their daughter Kacie
in 1999, which gives her special insights into the needs of foster children.
Alice has served on the VFC board since 2000, and is active in fund-raising
efforts for the organization, having served as co-chair for the organization's
major fundraiser, the "Art of Helping Children" dinner and art auction for
the past four years.
Originally from Houston, Alice graduated with honors from Texas A&M
in 1981 and earned her DVM degree in 1989. She is currently Assistant Clini-
cal Professor in the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharn~acology,
College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University where she works at
the Wildlife and Exotic Animal Center. An important element of Alice's work
is through community outreach programs such as KBTX-TV's Pear and Other
Anima~C series. She has been an active volunteer for the Brazos Animal Shelter
(BAS), and in 1993, she received the BAS's Humanitarian of the Year Award
for her efforts involved with an animal cruelty seizure of over 400 animals.
Alice has also been active with the Russ Welch Harley-Davidson Toy Run.
In 2004, she was Chair of the Family Selections Committee and Co-chair of
the Wrapping and Sorting Committee, helping to select families to be assisted
and then working with individuals and businesses to help ensure that each
family received as much as possible. In 2005 Alice received the prestigious
Jefferson Award, and in 2003 one of the TAMU Fish Camps was named in
her honor. Somehow Alice finds time to engage her artistic side, designing
and producing jewelry which is highly sought after for local fundraisers.
Alice's heroes/mentors for community involvement and volunteerism are
former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former President Jimmy Carter.
Her many and continuing contributions to our community are solid evidence
that she has chosen to follow in their footsteps.
