Notes from our Summer Workshop Everyone who attended the special Saturday Workshop in June had to agree that - we got more help and information on doing our own genealogical research than from any other program or workshop we have attended!! From the taping of that program, here are some of the notes to help you recall all that good advice. Mr. BREMER said he spoke at the rate of 1,90 words a minute, and as I listened to the tapes, I can agreed Five steps in researching: 1. Survey (Find out what's been done on your lines.) a. Check all of your home sources (old documents, Bible records, etc..) b. Write Salt Lake City to check those records Use the TOIR (Temple Ordinance Index Request) Remember that many of these records were placed in the library by members who were devoted, but sometimes over- zealous. Be sure to check for documentation. c. Write the Photoduplication Division of the Library of Congress for their listing of any books published about your surname. Check NUCMC (National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections) This catalog was started in the 50s, there are about five series, and is found in the A &M Library. Archives. (Go in the entrance that faces the Academic Building) Look up your surnames. This listing will tell you where family records, Bibles, pictures, etc. are located. (You must then write that library or depository and secure the information.) e. Decennial Digest - "Every Court House in the U.S. has one except Brazos County." This is an index of court cases that may give valuable genealogical information. Dates are 1658-1911. (Try it and see.) 2. `Preliminary Analysis - What records exist? What spheres of authority acid my grandparents reside in? "Everyone has one grandfather who has left in this world a hundred pieces of paper with their names on it and with some genealogical information." Determine the jurisdiction, surnames, time and available sources. 3. Research - Particular and General If you are looking for one name, research in a library, write to Salt Lake, etc. You are asking about one person-- that_is a particular search. When you conduct a general search, you go into a county or other jurisdiction and search for all references to the surnames for that jurisdiction. Conduct a general search in the ancestral county. More notes on this workshop will appear in future issues of the ADVERTISER. Here are a couple of quotes from Mr. BREMER that are worth thinking about. "Resist the urge to name gather; don't be a generalogist; begin with the death of an ancestor and work back sequentially. Don't skip any steps." "If you were suspected of practicing genealogy, would there be enough evidence to convict you ?" .(In other words, document To those genealogists who feel that they are very green at this business, he said "Only green things growl So take heart, along with me, and let's go forth and 'grow'! Bess GATLIN recommends the current issue of THE SMITHSONIAN (December 1981) There is an article "Our Family Trees Have Roots in Utah's Mountain Vaults" thLt we should be very inter- ested in.
