HomeMy WebLinkAboutVol.2 No.2WE ARE IN FOR A TREAT!! DON'T MISS IT:: Dr. Victor TREAT, professor in the Texas A &M History Department, wrote his dissertation on migrations in the South. He has agreed to be the speaker for the October 20 meeting of our Brazos Genealogical Association. This should be a real 'treat' for us. He may be willing to answer questions after his talk, so if you have a 'puzzler' on southern migrations, keep it in mind for this next meeting! October 20, 1980 7:00 pm Bryan Library ,. Members may wish to contribute to other books in her memory. Frances HENRY recently lost her mother, a lovely lady- - Martha Frances SHOCK. A memorial fund has been established in the li brary by the heritage organizations to which Frances and Mrs. SHOCK belonged. Some of our members may wish to add to that fund also. Another of our members, Mary HORN, lost a son recently. Mary, we are so sorry; you are remembered in our prayers. We have lost a local member in a happier way- -M-;ke Kerstetter has recently accepted a position in the state of Washington. We will miss Mike and his sharing of ideas on 'creative research'. We hope he will continue to keep in touch and let us know what new methods he has found for finding those elusive grandparents! Nan, the selections are great, we are pleased with the additions, but your descriptions and comments are extra specials THANKS: WARN INGd A WkRNING:I Recently Linda PRINGLE, the Bryan Librarian, received a notice from Beatrice BAILY of Sterling PA, stating that she had been researching the PRINGLE line and offered a book for $19.85. Linda bought the book and reports that it is nicely bound, has some general information on researching genealogy, forms to fill in her own line and in the back, some computer print outs of PRINGLE listings from telephone books from all over the United States. Nan ROSS reported this to the Advertiser because she wanted our members to be very careful about the offers we accept. There have been other reports about books that are really blank forms for the purchaser to fill in his own research, and we don't really need that, do we? We are sorry that Linda has been disillusioned, but appreciate her sharing her experience with us. Perhaps we can profit from her mistake. ANOTHER LIBRARY TIP Marian GRAHAM has discovered this bit of information for us - -the hard wayl Marian has been going to the A &M Library in the late afternoons. She had heard, as many of us had, that 'you could park anywhere' after 5.00 and week -ends. After she got her ticket (l), she went to the campus police department (which is on Jersey) and they gave her a parking permit for even- ing and week -end parking. All it cost her was a thirty minute wait in line. Let's profit by Marian's experience and get that permit. Many of us didn't know it was available or needed!! i This must be our library edition, as we seem to have a lot of library items. Sarakay JORDANI, Director of the Genealogy Collection in the Texas State Library recently sent us the fallowing memo: "In the interest of trying to better serve the burgeoning local and regional genealogy societies throughout the state, we are sending our schedule of holidays for the coming fiscal year. In growing numbers, many of your members come either individually or in groups to use YOUR facilities here in Austin. For many of you the distance, and expense, is great and it is hoped that this memo will prevent anyone from arriving here only to find us closed due to a holiday. 1 September 1980 13 October 1980 4 November 1980 11 November 1980 27 November 1980 28 November 1980 25 December 1980 24, 26 December 1980 1 January 1981 19 January 1981 16 February 1981 2 March 1981 21 April 1981 25 May 1981 19 June 1981 4 July 1981 27 August 1981 Labor Day Columbus Day National Election Veterans Day Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving Holiday Christmas Day Christmas Holidays New Years Day Confederate Heroes Day Washington's Birthday Texas Independence Day San Jacinto Day Memorial Day Emancipation Day Independence Day L.B.J's Birthday "We heartily salute your interest in our Texas and American heri- tages and a Texas vote of thanks is due many of you for your generous contributions of local books and materials of an his- torical or genealogical nature. Together we are creating a Gene- alogy Collection all Texans can use with pride." - -and another good bit of information from a new member! M.C..FORISTER, our new member from Austin, reports that our own local newspaper, The Eagle, has microfilm copies of prior editions. She had written about an article (no date given) and the publisher, W.S. PEAT SON, wrote her that they had the microfilm available but no way at the present time to copy it. He ended with an im=itation for her to come by the Eagle office and look over the editions she was interested in, in their microfilm library. Very interestingi. 39 en am ink (ven /J NOVEMBER MEETING The November 17 meeting of the Brazos Genealogical- Association will be a little different Dottie CLARK has proposed that members write down their stone wall or stumbling block--in other words, the problem that you most need help in solvingi Three of these will be selected and the 'program' next time will be brain- storming sessions on these three problems (about 20 minutes each). The idea is that this brain - storming will help the rest of us with some stumbling blocks of our own: If time permits, we may try to present one or two other questions. For this program to work, members should submit their question:; o describe - heir 'stumbling block'. Give it to Dottie at the October meeting, or mail to her: Dorothy CTARK,.Rt. 4, Box 78, Bryan, TX 77801.
