HomeMy WebLinkAbout5/18/05 MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING BRYAN + COLLEGE STATION PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM ADVISORY BOARD May 18, 2005 On the 18th day of May 2005, the Bryan + College Station Public Library Advisory Board of the cities of Bryan and College Station, Texas, met in a regular scheduled meeting at the Carnegie History Center, 111 S. Main Street, Bryan, Texas and the following members were present: 1. Also present were Mrs. Clara Mounce, Community Librarian; Mrs. Laura Mills, Secretary and Bruce Albright of the City of College Station. 3. Larry Ringer called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m. 4. The minutes from the March 22, 2005 meeting were approved as distributed. 5. Monthly statistics for March and April reviewed. Mrs. Mounce commented that circulation for both libraries decreased. 6. In old business, Mrs. Mounce reported the library’s migration to the Horizon system went well and was uneventful. Funds from the Doak Estate paid for the system. 7. In new business, Robin Jones provided handouts about the Summer Reading Programs in both libraries. The theme is “Go Wild, Read!” Programs at the Larry J. Ringer Library on Tuesdays will feature “come and go” or outside activities in order to accommodate patrons wanting to participate. The Bryan Library will host a variety of programs on Wednesdays in the meeting room that has a capacity of 200. Each participant will receive a book bag and those completing the log will receive prizes along with a book of their choice at the closing ceremony. Both libraries will host a Teen Reading program with activities geared toward teens. Storytime for preschoolers will be held at both libraries during the months of June and July. B. In the long range planning project, Mrs. Mounce reported that Pat Tuohy of CTLS facilitated the first meeting on Friday, May 13. There were 9 staff members in attendance along with Olivia Burnside and Bruce Mitchell of the City of College Station, lay rep Mary Fran Troy, and Barbara Bayer of the City of Bryan. Mrs. Mounce stated that the group is charged with developing four basic goals from the findings of surveys in the community. An architect will address the Long Range Planning group in October with a seminar on libraries of the future. The idea for a long range plan was initiated when the Bryan City Council approved an $835,000 HVAC contract for the library. 8. Mrs. Mounce reported that the estate of Frank VanDiver donated about 700 books, some of which will be placed in the collection, others sold at the Friends of the Library Book Sale. Mrs. Mounce is pursuing the purchase of a 35mm microfilm digital scanner to be housed in the Carnegie History Lab. The Gates Foundation offered a grant for continued computer update whereby the foundation will pay for 2/3 of the cost if the library funds the rest. The Friends of the Library will pay for custom computer desks to be placed near the reference area on the first floor. Mrs. Mounce commented that new framed art pieces have been hung in the entry way of the Carnegie. 9. There were no agenda items for the next meeting scheduled for July 19, 2005 at the Larry J.
