By HOLLY HUFFMAN
Eagle Staff Writer
Happy anniversary, Bryan
schools.
This fall marks 125 years
since the district opened the
doors to its
first public
grade school
in 1880. To cel-
ebrate the
milestone,
I Bryan school
officials are
planning an
anniversary
celebration
for October and are seeking
memorabilia from the dis-
trict's early years.
Former Bryan students are
encouraged to share their
I school memorabilia with the
district so it may bE! pho-
I tographed and preserved.
District officials particularly
are interested in old year-
books, photographs, report
cards and school programs,
spokeswoman Sandy Farris
said.
The first school - an
ornate, three-story building
built along Baker Avenue
where. Fannin Elementary
now sits - initially served
as a grade school and then
was a high school until being
torn down in 1949, Farris
said.
An anniver-I
sary celebra-
tion is
planned from
10 a.m. to 2
p.m. Oct. 22 -
during the dis-
trict's annual
homecoming
weekend - at
Heritage Park in Bryan. His-
torical displays will be show-
cased, and music and
refreshments will be avail-
able.
Those with memorabilia to
share may call the Bryan
school district communica-
tions office at 209-1020 or con-
tact the department via e-mail
at slfarris@bryanisd.org.
