HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/13/2023 - Regular Minutes - Parks Board (2) PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD AGENDA Monday February 13, 2023 Minutes Staff Present: Steve Wright, Director; Andrea Lauer, Administrative Support Specialist Board Present: David Higdon; Don Hellriegel; John Polasek; David White; Kevin Bishop; Scott Shafer Council Present: Call meeting to order and consider absence requests. With a quorum present, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was called to order @ 6:03 p.m. on Monday February 13, 2023. Lisa Aldrich, David Scott and Madeline Giroir requested excused absences. Hear visitors. None present. Informational Items 3.1 Welcome and Introduction of new members by Board Chair. Scott Shafer and Kevin Bishop were two of the three new members that were present and introduced. The third is David Scott and he had requested an excused absence. 3.2 Presentation, discussion and possible action by the Director of Parks and Recreation on matters pertaining to the Board. Steve Wright spoke about the date for the upcoming Gary Halter Dedication for the Lick Creek Nature Center. He mentioned the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner for all Boards and Committee members on 4/24/23 at 6 p.m. He also spoke about Chapter 5 in the Strategic Plan, he mentioned 5 pillars and 15 action steps and that projects should tie back to these. 3.3 Presentation, discussion, and possible action on the Parks Foundation. David White stated that he has filed the 501C3 and is just waiting to hear back. The plan is to have a Board Meeting soon and adopt the By-Laws. The group has talked about planting 85 trees for the upcoming 85th Anniversary of College Station and identifying 20 or so parks to focus on. A big project that they will be working on is a partnership with TAMU and Hensel Park. 3.4 Presentation, discussion and possible action on Bird City Designation. Steve Wright spoke about Bird City; he stated that Laurie Brown has formed sub-committees and they are working on the steps that must be completed to be awarded the designation. Two Bird Blinds are currently out for bid. The City of College Station will need Council support, as well as the Community and the media involvement. The hope is to have the application turned in sometime in 2024. Regular Agenda 4.1 Presentation, discussion, and possible action on the approval of minutes From the previous meeting. Upon a motion made by John Polasek and a second by David White, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted six (6) for and none (0) opposed, to approve the minutes from November 15, 2022. The motion carried unanimously. 4.2 Presentation, discussion and possible action on times and dates for Parks Board meetings. David Higdon would like to keep the meetings to 1 hour or no longer than 1 ½ hours if possible. The Board concluded that Tuesdays work best, so the meetings will continue the 2nd Tuesday of every month unless a date change is needed for quorum purposes. 6. Items of Community Interest. None Adjourn. Upon a motion made by Scott Shafer and second by John Polasek, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted six (6) for and none (0) opposed to adjourn the meeting at 7.07 p.m. The motion carried unanimously.
