It was unclear late Wednes- day where Patterson was at the time of the attack, City Manag- er Tom Brymer said. More information was not immedi- ately available. Patterson joined the force in 1978 after two years with the art attaci~ University Police Department and eight months with the Bra- zoria County Sheriffs Depart- ment. He held several positions within the College Station department before becoming an assistant chief, said Brymer, who had worked vdith Patterson since 1989. "He cared deeply about the College Station Police Depart- ment," Brymer said. "He is the reason the agency is where it is today. We are going to miss him.
