rendered with a garrison of 2,445
Army and Navy personnel.
The surrender ceremony took
place abord the destroyer USS
Bagley. ,
'Ihe Navy said that the Japs'
Marcus commander, Rear Adm.
M. Matsubara, rose from a sick-
bed to attend the ceremony on the
Bagley's forecastle. He was ac-I
companied by five staff officers.

N. H., three ceremonial swords at -
1 the opening of the 39-minute
! ceremony.
Matsubara said that the majori-
ty of the Marcus personnel were
ill and emaciated as the result of
dysentery and malnutrition.
Three hundred Japs, he said,
were evacuated on destroyers a
few days ago.
From the Bagley, it was possi-
ble to seethe damage done to the
island by American bombers.
No date was set for the formal
occupation. '
