Council Members Present: Linda Harvell 1. Call meeting to order and consider absence requests.
With a quorum present, the History Preservation Committee Board was called to order at 4 PM by
William Wright on Monday, August 1, 2022. Gerald Burgner and Marilyn Maddox requested an excused
absence and the board voted unanimously to accept. 2. Hear visitors. No Visitors.
3. Agenda Items
3.1 Presentation, discussion, and the possible approval of minutes from the previous meeting. Sherry Frisk had two corrections to the minutes and the Historic Preservation Committee
Board voted to approve the minutes with said corrections. The motion carried unanimously. 3.2 Presentation, discussion, and possible action regarding the sub-committees and programs
of Historic Preservation Committee, including:
A. Cemetery Sherry Frisk updated the committee on a monument that she believes should be placed at “Washington Chapel/ Salem” to commemorate the 53 unmarked graves. The committee discussed the idea and what
could be placed at that location and if the Parks department can assist in the funding of the monument.
Sherry Frisk made a motion to present to the Parks board the idea to add a monument to recognize the
53 unmarked graves. Tre Watson seconded the motion, and the committee voted unanimously.
B. Historical Marker Program No new applications were submitted to process. Patricia Cleere – Marker# 110 was unable to attend the marker presentation. Parks will coordinate with the family to add to another council meeting date.
C. Exploring History Lunch Series
William Wright has coordinated six months of history luncheon speakers.
August 2022- "Manning Smith Dance Legacy" by Sherry Smith Frisk
Sept 2022- ” Eagle Pennell: College Station Filmmaker & Outlaw of Regional Cinema” by William Wright
October 2022- "Gazing into College Station’s Crystal Ball” by Mayor Karl Mooney
Nov 2022- “Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial: A Walk in the Park” by Stephen C. Beachy
Dec 2022- “Bush Family Christmas Traditions” by The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and
Museum
Jan 2023-Live in Aggieland
Feb 2023-African American History

April-Sherry Frisk D. McCulloch Neighborhood Interviews Barbara Moore with the CMO office would like to conduct
more interviews.
F. 85th Birthday of City of College Station
Councilwoman Linda Harvell will be creating a subcommittee to bring in volunteers to assist in the celebration. They can create the vision for the celebration and inform the city of what assistance will be needed.
G. American Mile No Update
F. QR Code on Historic Homes Shirley Dupriest asked that this project be placed on hold.
3.3 Presentation and discussion on a report from the Parks and Recreation Director. Reena Gonzalez presented the committee handbook. With the vacancy of two members, the new
quorum is 5 with a majority quorum vote of 3. The city secretary’s office is aware of the vacancies and
listed the position on the website. Ana Romero spoke with the committee on the future dates of the
lunch lecture and the need to have the speakers in advance to ensure we are marking to the
community with enough time. 3.4 Presentation of historical items
Louis Hodges brought buttons from the early 1800s that were made from silver coins.
Sherry Frisk brought a record of square-dancing music from her father and shared a little bit about his
life as an international square dancer. She will be elaborating on this topic at her history luncheon on
August 17th for "Manning Smith Dance Legacy" by Sherry Smith Frisk.
3.5 Identification of upcoming local or area historical programs or activities to be placed in a calendar of events.
Boonville Days will be hosted on October 1, 2022, at 3232 Briarcrest Drive, Bryan, Texas 77802.
Tickets are $20 each and are pre-sold at the Brazos Valley Museum. Join the Brazos Valley Museum of
Natural History on October 1, 2022, for the 17th annual Boonville Days: Texas Heritage Festival! To
kick off the festival, runners and walkers of all ages are welcome to join in the 14th Annual Buffalo Stampede Half Marathon & 5K Race at 7:30 am starting at the Brazos Center. After the race, the entire family can enjoy other fun activities highlighting Texas History at this free heritage festival!
4. Adjourn and Closing
William Wright motioned to adjourn the Historic Preservation Committee Board Meeting at 5:05 PM;
Sherry Frisk seconded the motion, all carried in a unanimous vote. The next HPC meeting will be held Monday, September 12th, 2022.
