Pam Springfield - parkway park Page From: Joan Etter <joanetter@yahoo.com> To: "Pete (Parkway Park) Vanecek" <Pvanecek@cstx.gov> Date: 4/3/2005 3:49:34 PM Subject: parkway park pete, i have been noticing the development of your ideas and the quick positive response to all of it. this work has already proved itself as a very good thing, and it all will be gorgeous once all of the leaves come out. the park is beautiful with all of the new plantings of trees, crepe myrtles, and wax myrtles, as well as the 2 lamps, benches, and sidewalk. oh yes, the water fountain with the foot-handwashing/animal drinking basin as well. thank you so much for the work of doing this. i wanted to report that many people have already used the benches for sitting while their children play or for chatting and the sidewalk for baby strollers, walking dogs, and just today a group of 5 young girls with their bicycles that they could zip downhill and across the bridge. a fun thing, nothing dangerous. having the sidewalk seems to have opened this park up to people on both sides of marstellar and elsewhere who before perhaps wouldn't walk to the other side because they would need to go all the way around the creek for fear that the ground might be soggy. and i have realized just this weekend while seeing children there that children whose parents might not let them come because it might be muddy can now come and have lots of space for sitting and walking on the ground and keeping dry. about the neighborhood picnic: bringing a yard chair could be helpful, if someone wants to sit or if the ground is soggy wet. thanks again, pete. IRONMENT, SCIENCE & SPACE Flying high at the dump • EPA agreement could turn landfills into mini runways for model planes By DINA CAPPIELLO HOUSTON CHRONICLE Buddy Brammer's idea of a perfect afternoon is a clear, sunny day spent atop the local garbage dump. On most weekends, that's where Brammer, the vice presi- dent of the Mid -County Radio Control Club, can be found fly- ing his model airplanes. "We've been out there now for 14 years," Brammer said of the old Mid -County Municipal League Garbage Dump in Ned- erland in Jefferson County, which is the only site his flying club has. "We were one of the first ones in the country that was on a garbage dump." Soon Brammer, and model airplane hobbyists across the country, will have more closed landfills at their disposal. In an agreement signed be- tween the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Academy of Model Aeronautics last month, the EPA said it will provide model fliers with a list of Superfund, or hazardous waste, sites that model pilots can use for their activities. In re- turn, the clubs will maintain the portion of the land they will be using. "We don't need the ground, we just need the air above it," said Joseph Beshar, the flying sites coordinator for the Acad- emy of Model Aeronautics. Some of the 2,500 clubs across the country are already using 145 landfills for runways LAUNCHING PAD: Club president Bob Scheppele, 53, of BeaumontSCOTT ESLINGER : BEAUMONT , pilots his model airplane in Nederland.sE and launchpads for miniature aircraft — including more than a half dozen in Texas. The Super - fund sites could include land- fills, or properties where indus- trial activity has led to contami- nation. Beshar says the partnership will open up 1,500 potential sites across the country — hot commodities since they tend to be open fields with lots of space to takeoff. Recently, as develop- ment has gobbled up open space, enthusiasts have struggled to find places to fly. "The modeling community is hungry for places to fly," Be- shar said. And since many closed land- fills release methane gas, there are restrictions on their use. Few are suitable for closed structures and there can be no digging, which can jeopardize the dump's cap. In many cases, they become magnets for more trash long af- ter they are closed or eyesores in the community. "This ensures they don't be- come an attraction for vandals and mountain bikes and stuff like that," said Dale Kemery, an E SCHOLAR the ocean water up into the system. It does not. Four years ago, the agency signed a similar agreement with the U.S. Soccer Foundation to use remediated Superfund sites as playing fields. In the Houston area, former landfills have also been turned into golf courses. At the Nederland landfill, Brammer's group wants to up- grade the spectator seats and the food stand. But before they do, they want to sign a long- term lease with the local gov- ernment. Their current lease expires at the end of the year. In the meantime, Brammer said he would be scouting his lo- cal Superfund sites. dina.cappiello@chron.com SCIENCE FACT A SNEAKY, SNAKE MYTH St. Patrick's Day commemorates the patron saint of Ireland, Bishop Patrick, who more than 1,500 years ago left his home in England to bring Christianity to Ireland.
