HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/21/2021 - Minutes - Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Greenways Advisory Board MINUTES BICYCLE, PEDESTRIAN, AND GREENWAYS ADVISORY BOARD MEETING Monday, June 21, 2021 3:00 PM Virtual meeting via Zoom MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairperson Elizabeth Cunha, Kathy Langlotz, Rebecca Brooker, David Higdon and Joy Chmelar MEMBERS ABSENT: Dennis Jansen and Kyle LeBlanc STAFF PRESENT: P&DS Assistant Director Molly Hitchcock, Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Greenways Planning Administrator Venessa Garza, Board Secretary Grecia Fuentes, Administrative Support Specialist Kristen Hejny. Hitchcock AGENDA ITEM NO. 1: Call to Order and consider absence requests Chairperson Cunha called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. AGENDA ITEM NO. 2: Hear Visitors. There were no visitors who wished to speak. AGENDA ITEM NO. 3 Agenda Items AGENDA ITEM NO. 3.1. Consideration, discussion, and possible action to approve meeting minutes. Board member Higdon motioned to approve the minutes from March 15, 2021 and April 20, 2021. The motion was seconded by board member Chmelar and was approved (5-0). AGENDA ITEM NO. 3.2. Presentation and discussion regarding the Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Greenways Advisory Board calendar of upcoming meetings. • Monday, July 19, 2021 Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Greenways Advisory Board Meeting ~ 3:30 p.m. There was general discussion regarding upcoming July board meeting. Administrator Garza stated that the next meeting will be an overview of proposed changes to the City’s Comprehensive Plan. The Board will be returning to in person meetings, but a Zoom option will be available. AGENDA ITEM NO. 3.3: Presentation and discussion regarding a follow up on National Bike Month. There was general discussion amongst the board regarding the National Bike Month bike ride. Chairperson Cunha stated there were over 40 participants. The Board discussed their overall experience and expressed their desire to add a longer route next year for experienced cyclists. Administrator Garza asked the Board about the time of the event being adjusted to a later time perhaps to help get more families to participate next time. Chairperson Cunha requested to add these items to January agenda to preplan for a 2022 bike ride in spring. Board Member Chmelar also suggested having extra bikes available next year for families to use that might want to participate. AGENDA ITEM NO. 3.4: Presentation and discussion regarding the Bicycle Friendly Community Designation. Administrator Garza gave a brief overview of the presentation given in a previous meeting. Chairperson Cunha spoke about possibly joining the Back-to-School event to be held at the Lincoln Center on July 31st from 10am- 1pm. Board members Chmelar and Brooker suggested having a TAMU athlete participate or advertise bicycle riding or speak on bike safety. Another suggestion was to have a well-known TAMU athlete sign a bicycle and have it as a prize. Board member Higdon asked if the Parks Department could do an introduction to bike safety event and also asked how to have bicycle routes updated on Google Maps. AGENDA ITEM NO. 4: Possible action and discussion on future agenda items A Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Greenways Advisory Board Member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. Board Member Higdon asked about improving upon existing IT infrastructure like Google Maps to help identify the best routing options for bicyclists and in the future creating a rating system for current bicycle paths. Board Member Langlotz asked for information on why the safe passing ordinance was not passed. AGENDA ITEM NO. 5: Adjourn.
