Called to order and announced a Quorum at 4 p.m. by Chair Gerald Burgner • Thomas Smith made a request for absence. Shirley Dupriest made a motion to accept the absence request. William Wright, second the motion. The vote was called, all were in favor, and the motion was passed unanimously. • Julie Schultz made a motion to approve the May minutes Shirley Dupriest, second the motion. The vote was called, all were in favor, and the motion was passed unanimously. 2. Citizen Bobby Mirza is a visitor for the determination of his Historical Home Marker Application for 610 Welsh Ave. 3. Agenda Items 3.1 Presentation, discussion, and possible action on the proposal for a Texas Historic Marker for Parkland Dedication in the City of College Station. • Cemetery Project: Sherry Frisk, Gerald Burgner, and Shirley Dupriest presented three Historic Texas Cemetery certificates for Salem, Shiloh, and College Station Cemetery on behalf of HPC at the last city council meeting. Now Sherry Frisk is waiting to see if the Texas Historical Marker application for the College Station Cemetery will be approved by the Texas Historical Commission in Austin. If approved in July, it can take a year or more to get the actual interpretive marker in place. • Historic Marker Program: Some of the HPC members presented Historic Marker #106 for 314 Pershing Avenue to the Vincent Family at the City Council Meeting. This was the first in- person presentation at council since the shutdown from the pandemic. The committee has received a new home marker application from Wajahat(Bobby) and Afshi(Sara)Mirza who live on 610 Welsh Avenue. Bobby Mirza is in attendance today to answer any questions on said application. Councilwoman Linda Harvell discussed the marker on Mike Luther’s home. The home is located right next door to the Mirza Family. Mr. Luther passed away over a year ago and the home is going under an estate sale. Councilwoman Harvell suggested if the family agrees to put the Luther marker on the Mirza home since they have lived next to one another for many years and were close. Councilwoman Harvell would hate to see the marker go along with the estate sale. Julie Schultz stated the current owner of the home could either give marker back to the city or to the Mirza Family. Julie stated if you move a marker from one home to another it will cause confusion when people look up the history of the home and the marker is on a different home. If the previous marker is transferred to the Mirza home then Bobby Mirza will need to write a narrative that matches his home to go along with the Luther home. Bobby Mirza stated this may be difficult because the current owner lives out of town and they do not speak very often. David Fujimoto believes the marker should stay with the original home. The suggestion was made to try and save the marker in case it was sold within the estate sale. The committee agrees if the home is in danger then it would be good to retrieve the marker from the home. William Wright made a motion to approve the application for 610 Welsh Ave. Shirley Dupriest second the motion. The vote was called, all were in favor, and the motion was passed unanimously. The Mirza Family will be presented the #107 marker at a later scheduled time. Gerald Burgner sent the notice to the Wakefield Family regarding their application denial for 208 Pershing. The applicant has not yet responded to the notice at this time. Shirley Dupriest is currently assisting a family on an application who live at 501 Prairie View. • Removal Process/Protocol for Historic Markers: Ana Romero stated Leslie is currently waiting on some changes to the protocol. Once these changes have been made within the wording she will forward it over to Gerald Burgner. • Artifacts: Where Are They?: Councilwoman Harvell has a meeting with Station 6 in the morning and she will get more information on this matter and report back to the committee. • Special Research Committee: Nothing to report. This agenda item will be put on hold until further notice. • HPC Social Media Posting: Nothing to report. This agenda item will be put on hold until further notice. • America's 250th Birthday: Nothing to report. • Historical Heritage Event: Shirley Dupriest suggested that HPC would look into participating in this event in the future as well as other local College Station events to promote historical preservation awareness. Councilwoman Harvell stated the Chancellor pulled the 4th of July fireworks event from the Busch Library. The College Station Noon Lions Club will be having a daylong event at Wolf Pen Creek on July 3rd. There will be vendors and Councilwoman Harvell will send out the information to the committee. Gerald Burgner stated this is a fine idea however, the committee will need volunteers to be at the booths for these events. Before the committee agrees to be at any events the committee needs to have volunteers signed up to be at the event. William Wright suggested working with parks on putting together a 5k or mile walk through the historical homes. This would promote historical awareness and community togetherness. The committee agrees this is a good idea and are interested in looking into this further. This is just an idea and will not be added to the agenda until further information is collected. There will also be a meeting in December for the lunch lecture. Ana requested a list of speaker’s and their topics from Marilyn Randall so Ana can get that information to the library. 3.3 No presentation and identification of upcoming local or area historical programs or activities to be placed on a calendar of events. 4. Louis Hodges presented a fossilized shark tooth that he occasionally wears as a necklace. 5. Agenda items Special Research Committee and Social Media Posting will be put on hold until further notice. Exploring History Lunch Series will return as an active agenda item starting in July’s meeting. 6. Motion made to adjourn by Julie Schultz, second by William Wright, and carried by unanimous vote at 5:15PM.
