Monday Tall
A name change for the City of
College Station will be discussed
a,t the regular 7 p.m. meeting
next Monday of the College Sta
ticin City Council.
Mayor M. D. (Andy) Anderson
said today that until the council
makes an official statement
Monday, "the matter is closed."
The council decided "to just
let it die" during a special 5 p.m.
called meeting Monday after-
noon. The open meeting to which
news media was invited, was
called to discuss a contract with
the Wellborn Water Supply.
However, the council informal-
ly discussed the name change
following approval of the con-
tract. All councilmen concurred
"for the . time being that it be
dropped for further considera
tion."

THE WATER contract will
allow Wellborn citizens to pur-
chase water from College Sta-
tion at 30 cents per thousand.
However delivery of 1.5 million
gallons a month will not be-
gin until College Station com-
pletes present water system im-
provements. This will be within
a year.
In other action, the council
passed a resolution calling for
concurrance from the U.S. Hous

Aggie To Help TU.P ~
How About 4 On 50
Jack Crichton of Dallas, president of Tex-
as A&M University's Association of Former
Students, offered Monday to up the 'it of Texas Ex-Stues' -
the Univers
at on contest to help A&M rename itsAhome-
town.
"We're a little shocked that the TU people
can only afford two end zone seats to this
year's Turkey Day game as top prize for
suggesting a new name for College Station,"
Crichton noted.
"Although financial need has never been a.
characteristic of Texas U., he added, if this
is the case this year we would like to come
to the aid of our Texas friends and offer
the winner four tickets on the 50-yard-line."
"Perhaps," Crichton observed, "the end
zone offer is based on a desire to get the
Texas exes as far as possible from the may-
hem that will take place this year when
contest as the result of a news story noting Station
Coach Stallings' men go into action on
Thanksgiving Day."
The TU group announced plans to hold a
might possibility e
be changed to reflect the progress
and current status of the South-Central Texas
City.
Proponents of the name change pointed
out A&M attained university status more
than three years ago, so the "college" de-
scription is no longer accurate.
Backers of the proposal also feel a change
of name could help Texans become more
aware of the large-scale scientific and en-
gineering o research d being
o out o&M conducted w will soon be
pointed
A&M. They y
operating one of the largest atom smashers
in the country and recently opened a new
space research center. The university's nu-
are
clear reactor and in computer the facilities nation,
also among the best they
added.
The movement to change the name of the
city was initiated because its original de-
scriptive nature no longer exists, the pro-
ponents concluded.
