1. Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present
With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Linda Harvell at 4:07 p.m. on Monday, February 4, 2013 at the Stephen C. Beachy Central Park Office,
1000 Krenek Tap Road, College Station, Texas 77842.
2. Hear Visitors
There were no Citizen Comments.
3. Possible action and discussion on absence requests.
Committee discussed the importance regular meeting attendance given the two vacant committee positions.
4. Possible action and discussion of previous minutes.
MOTION: The Committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes with minor correction.
5. Chair Report and Update regarding 75th Anniversary Activities
Chair Harvell reported that 75th anniversary preparations are underway. She indicated that aspects of the homecoming events for returning alumni of local schools may not occur, as some
of the classes preferred to organize their own events. The opening for the Bush Library event
was reported to now be October 26th, with the accompanying event and activities occurring on November 15 or 16th.
Committee discussed the Bush Library exhibit and ways to collect material. Chair Harvell reported that the TAMU Garden Club is planning to create period floral arrangements for the event.
Pat Cleere stated that Carnegie Library has a “Brazos Valley Speaks” oral history program that may prove useful.
6. Report from HPC staff on Historic Records Coordinator Office activities.
Jacob Morris summarized the activities provided in the agenda packet. He also introduced one of the interns, Thomas Schott. He also informed members that an ongoing project was underway
to update the American mile bricks, and encouraged members to submit historical events for inclusion.
7. Review, possible action, and discussion regarding the following sub-committees:
Historic Marker Program
Committee discussed making a goal of 2 designations per year.
Oral History Transcription Project
No major developments
Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series
Committee discussed sponsors and speakers for the Exploring History Luncheons. Chair Harvell stated that 5 luncheons do not have sponsors and encouraged committee to contact potential
sponsors. Committee discussed creating a sponsorship packet, donor fact sheet.
Using handouts provided by Marci Rodgers and Linda Harvell, the committee constructed a partial speaker schedule as follows:
March 20,
Speaker: Sunny Nash, award-winning columnist, speaker, and author of Bigmama Didn’t Shop at Woolworths
Sponsor: Watercrest at Bryan
April 17
Speaker: Alston Thoms, Ph.D., Professor of Anthropology will speak of Native American Prehistory in the Brazos Valley.
Sponsor: College Station Medical Center- Senior Circle
May 15- Colonel James Woodall – “Military Heritage of Texas A&M and the Texas Aggie Medals of Honor”
Sponsor: Physicians Home Medical Equipment
June 19- TBA
Sponsor: Texas Trading Post (willing to move sponsorship to any month)
July 17- TBA
Sponsor: TBA
August- Red Cashion
Sponsor: TBA
September 18- TBA
Sponsor: Waldenbrooke Estates
October 16- Panel= “What it was like being one of the first Co-eds at Texas A&M” (need specific panel members)

Libby Vastano indicated that she would begin interviews.

9. Discussion and possible action on future agenda items.
Jerry Cooper suggested possibly creating a plaque specific to the 75th anniversary of sufficient size to see from the street to raise awareness of historic buildings, homes, and places.
10. Adjournment
MOTION: The Committee moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:44 p.m. on Monday, February 4, 2013. The motion carried unanimously.
