1. Called to order and announced a Quorum at 4 p.m. by Gerald Burgner.
2. Tiffany Gonzales had a request for absence. Gerald Burgner asked for a motion to approve.
Marilyn second the motion. The vote was called. All were in favor. By a unanimous vote, the
motion was passed.
3. William Wright, made a motion to approve the May minutes. Shirley Dupriest, seconded the
motion. The vote was called. All were in favor and the motion passed unanimously.
4. We had one visitor: Steven C. Beachey. Mr. Beachey, spoke in regards to stories of CS History
that need to be told on historical markers. There were four ideas he spoke on. 1.) Getting Historical
markers as a subject. If approved through the committee, then they should be approved through the
state. If a marker is approved through the state, then it should be placed on a post. A new marker
should be in place when the new City Hall is dedicated. 2.) Parkland dedication in Texas needs to be
mapped out to show the significance of dedication within the state of Texas. Information can be told
through a subject marker. The site he suggested to locate marker would be John Crompton Park. 3.)
th
A&M United Methodist Church will be celebrating its 100 anniversary on June 23, 2023. Mr. Beachey
would like to see a subject marker on that building. The marker will be paid for by the Church. 4.) An
Archeological study was done at Veterans & Lick Creek Parks. The researcher was a Principal named
Austin Thomas. Evidence of habitation was found at theses parks. He found camp sites – tents. He
would like a marker for these sites. They called them the Indians of the Brazos Valley area.
5. For the College Station History book, everyone has been working on their perspective years and getting
lots of research done.
For Cemetery Project, Sherry Frisk thanked Marilyn Randall and Shirley DuPriest for their research
regarding "Outstanding College Station Citizens" buried in the city cemetery on Texas Avenue.
Information has been gathered on 118 people on our "master list" and the Historic Preservation
Committee will need to decide how many more names will be enough for this beginning effort.
Sherry recommended that more African American names and Czech names (those buried in the Salem
& Shiloh Cemeteries) be added to our research list and asked for help in identifying those people.
With the goal in mind of obtaining a state historic marker for our historic cemeteries, Sherry has
continued researching the history of the Washington Chapel Baptist Church and the Washington
Chapel Cemetery (now known as Salem), as well as the Rector Chapel and Cemetery (now known as
Shiloh). The first objective has been to prove who is actually buried in those cemeteries. Working
with information from Bill Page, tombstones in the cemeteries and documentation in the College
Station Interment Record Book, lists of names to research were compiled. The conclusion, based on
information from the County Clerk's Office and resources in Carnegie Library, is that the approximate
total buried in the Salem Cemetery is 126 individuals and that the Shiloh Cemetery contains graves of
approximately 196 individuals. Since there are many who are not accounted for in any other way,
Sherry would like to see the HPC support some future effort to establish a memorial in their honor.
Historical Marker Program applications - No new applications were turned in. The entire application
packet is being revised by Gerald and Lou. There were several additions/corrections given by the
committee to be included or updated on the application. David Schmitz stated once the application is
completed with the changes, it will need to be sent to City Hall to be approved. Once changes are
finalized, the application will be available online.
College Station Oral History – Tiffany stated they have hired an intern. He is transcribing
Blanche Brick’s interview and will then more to transcribing more. She has scheduled an oral
history interview with Henry Mayo, and conducted an oral history interview with CSAN
member Dr. Robert Woodward. Tiffany has also followed up with George McEachern and is
waiting to hear back from him for an interview.
Exploring History Lunches list was passed out by Marilyn Randall. We have all months filled
with speakers starting in June 2019 to March 2020, except for December 2019.
For Project HOLD, Tiffany has scanned newspaper clippings onto Project HOLD. Newspaper
clippings are from the Eagle related to obituaries, community commentary, and events in the
city. She has received documents from Sherry Frisk and a resident reached out wanting to
donate pictures that he found while cleaning his mom’s house.
