HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/06/2019 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation Committee MINUTES Historic Preservation Committee Monday, May 6, 2019 – 4:00 pm Municipal Court 300 Krenek Tap Road College Station, Texas 77842 The City Council may or may not attend the Historic Preservation Committee Regular Meeting. Present: Louis Hodges - √ Marilyn Randall - √ Sherry Frisk - √ Gerald Burgner - √ William Wright - √ Shirley Dupriest - √ Willie Blackmon - x Julie Schultz - √ David Fujimoto - √ Linda Harvell; City Council - √ Tiffany Gonzalez – Historical Records Archivist - √ 1. Called to order and announced a Quorum at 4 p.m. by Gerald Burgner. 2. There were no requests for absences. 3. Louis Hodges, made a motion to approve the April minutes. Sherry Frisk, seconded the motion. The vote was called. All were in favor and the motion passed unanimously. 4. We had two visitors: Patsy Johnson. She lives in the College Hills Eastgate neighborhood. John Nichols suggested she talk about keeping the Parks website updated. Kelly Kelbly, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, informed her that all updates are made by the Parks office. Patsy stated that the website says Brison Park was the first park in College Station. Shirley Dupriest thinks that the park was acquired by the city in 1947. Patsy would like Thomas Park to be renamed to Mabel Claire Thomas Historical Park. The second visitor was Augusta Thomason. She is a student for TAMU Historical department. She came in to oversee the meeting and hear what was on the agenda. 5. For the College Station History book, Lou Hodges is doing research for year 2002. Apparently, there was terrorism that he found information on. David Fujimoto is doing research on 2017 and has some hyperlinks to add for Tiffany to upload. For Cemetery Project, Sherry has moved from the Salem side and now working on the Shiloh section. There are 34 names that are not in the database and 146 names they are researching. During her research, she found around 100 of the names and spots. Kevin Gluwocky & Mark Everitt, College of Geo Sciences met with Sherry, Lou, Shirley, David Schmitz, Ron Schaefer, and James Schroeder. Kevin and Mark are going to locate burial grounds that we aren’t aware of. This will happen late August-September. There will be no cost for the city for this to be done. A drone and ground penetrating radar will be used. Historical Marker Program applications are being edited by Gerald and Lou. They will update once revisions are complete. The entire application is being revised. There was an application submitted for: 805 Hawthorne. William Wright made a motion to approve the marker. Shirley Dupriest second it. All approved. Vote was unanimous. College Station Oral History Interviews for intern are complete. The intern will be starting this month. Tiffany finished the interview with the Wallace Phillips group. She is transcribing Blanche Bricks interview. Tiffany is accepting all newspaper clippings to upload. Exploring History Lunches list was passed out by Marilyn Randall. William proposed that the two Professors, Kevin and Mark come speak at one of the lunches. Linda Harvell will speak at a lunch discussing being one of the first Aggie Females. Sherry Frisk will speak in February 2020, on Cemeteries. Starting in September, all lunches should be located at the College Station Library. For Project HOLD, Tiffany is still collecting newspaper articles. She has uploaded 400 photos off of the Flicker account. Tiffany will be meeting with the Legal department regarding the picture book to see what they will use. 6. For upcoming events, the State Historical committee will be meeting in the Fall. More details will be coming at a later date. 7. Kelly Kelbly, and Sherry Frisk are working together on the cemetery project. 8. There weren’t any presentations or discussion on future agenda items. 9. Presentations: Sherry Frisk brought several random pictures, old newspaper clippings, and an AMCHS program. Lou brought a penny – one side was English, the other side was French. 10. Motion made to adjourn by Sherry Frisk, seconded by William Wright, and carried by unanimous vote at 5:30PM.
