Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Susan Irza at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2012 in the College Station Conference Center, 1300 George Bush Drive, Room 103, College Station, Texas 77842. 2. Hear Visitors There were no Citizen Comments. 3. Possible action and discussion on absence requests. No action was needed. Hillary Jessup has an excused absence. 4. Possible action and discussion of minutes for: • February 6, 2012 RM030512 Minutes Page 2 MOTION: Upon a motion made by Louis Hodges and a second by Libby Vastano, the Committee voted seven (7) for and none (0) opposed, with MD Marshall not present, to approve the minutes as submitted. The motion carried unanimously. 5. Report from HPC staff on budget, contacts, activities and acquisitions ---Jacob Morris Jacob Morris reported that project HOLD is being re-organized in line with industry standards. He said that the backlog of un-scanned and/or return items has been reduced. He reported that material is being developed for communications and the 75th anniversary exhibit at Bush library. He reported that oral histories are underway. He stated that his office currently had one volunteer, and was posting for one or two additional interns. 6. Reminder to HPC members with expiring terms to reapply, in order to be considered by City Council for reappointment. Susan Irza encouraged all Committee Members to reapply if desired, Sherry Mashburn distributed cards with instructions to apply for appointment. Susan Irza stated that she would not be seeking re-appointment. 7. Review, possible action, and discussion regarding the following sub-committees: • Historic Marker Program – M.D. Marshall M.D. Marshall reported that he has a proposed marker for approval. Chair Irza suggested making formal proposal at April meeting. Marshall reported that he has contacted suppliers of markers and received price quotes as low as $190. He expressed concern that payment of marker cost by applicants could be perceived as “buying” the marker, undermining legitimacy. He suggested exploring a flat application fee. Committee discussed options for marker financing, and preventing theft and vandalism of markers. • Oral History Transcription Project – Lou Hodges Lou Hodges reported that progress is slow, and he will have more information to report next time. • Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series – Susan Irza, Marci Rodgers, Ann Hayes Anne Hayes reported that 75 attended the Exploring History Lecture for February, with 62 paid lunches. Implementing an honorarium for speakers was discussed. Texas Traders offered to donate a small gift to speakers, and Lou Hodges offered to present mesquite jelly to the March speaker. • 75th Anniversary – Linda Harvell, Patricia Cleere, Jerry Cooper, Susan Irza Linda Harvell reported that the 75th Anniversary Committee will meet on March 8th. She stated that Mike Neu has arranged exhibit space with the Bush Library, and discussed options for exhibits. The proposed event at Veterans Park has no firm date until the TAMU has their schedule. She reported that the proposed time capsule is cancelled. RM030512 Minutes Page 3 • College Station Timeline & College Station History Book Advisor – Jerry Cooper Jerry Cooper reported that the book contract is having difficulties with the city. He citedwith contract language as the cause. He reported that he has been communicating with city council about publishing. He stated that the city prefers on-demand and online publishing options, and is not agreeable to privately-sponsored publishing options. • History Book Update – Bill Harper Bill Harper reported that the terms of the book contract are in continued negotiation with the city attorney. The outcome is undetermined. He stated that he spoke with several potential sources of book information, such as the Research Ramblers, the East Texas Historical Association, and an interview with John Happ. • College Station Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives – Libby Vastano, Susan Irza Libby Vastano reported reported that she has contacted several people for interviews, and one has been conducted. 8. Presentation and discussion of historical items presented by committee members which may include historical books, pictures, artifacts, scrapbooks, or other memorabilia. No action will be taken. Ann Hayes presented a College Station police badge formerly belonging to her father. Lou Hodges distributed a book, a 1908 edition of the Lincoln Douglas debates. 9. Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. Council proposed to put a Historic Marker recommendation on the April agenda. 11. Adjournment MOTION: Upon a motion made by Jerry Cooper and a second by Ann Hayes, the Committee voted seven (7) for and none (0) opposed, with Linda Harvell not present, to adjourn the meeting at 5:32 p.m. on Monday, March 75, 2012.
