It brings everyone together to enjoy our parks, pools, programs, and events. This summer, we are more excited than ever. With the help of other city departments, we’ve kicked off more than 20 projects this fiscal year. Here are some highlights: • In our neighborhood parks, Crescent Point will receive increased amenities, construction has started on Reatta Meadows, a fitness pod is planned for Castlegate, Gabbard will have new fencing and docks, and a pavilion roof will be added to the basketball courts at Crompton. • The parking lots, drainage, and lighting systems at Stephen C. Beachy Central Park and Brian Bachmann Park are being redesigned to enhance functionality. New restroom facilities and an upgrade to the existing pavilions also are planned for Beachy and Bee Creek Park. Construction for these improvements will begin in the fall and winter as we schedule around our many events, leagues and other activities. • Softball and kickball athletes at Beachy Central Park and adult soccer players at Bachmann Park will soon enjoy new lighting systems. • The renovation of the Lincoln Recreation Center is nearing completion. The facility includes two gymnasiums and about 30,000 square feet of programmable space. • Construction has started at the Larry J. Ringer Library to add 12,000 square feet of programmable space. • Two additional synthetic turf fields are under construction at Veterans Park & Athletic Complex for our citizens and guests to enjoy in 2019. That’s just some of our ongoing projects. We thank you for your continued support and use of the City of College Station’s amazing facilities! The event is patterned after the Olympic Games and U.S. Olympic Sports Festivals and provides Texans of all ages and skill levels a wholesome avenue for positive, personal development through sports and physical activity. Recognized as the largest amateur sporting event in the state, the Games of Texas has grown steadily since the inaugural event in San Antonio in 1986. The competition creates an exceptional forum for Olympic hopefuls and recreational amateur athletes to train and compete. The City of College Station will host the Games for the sixth time after conducting events in 1988, 1994, 2000, 2014, and 2015 when it attracted about 7,750 athletes and 12,000 spectators to the Bryan/College Station area. Athletes of all ages can compete in 14 events, including archery, pickleball, judo, lifeguarding, boxing, golf, skateboarding, soccer, bowling, swimming, tennis, sand volleyball, skeet shooting, and track and field. This year, with more than 1,500 local volunteers helping conduct the event, we hope to attract more than 20,000 visitors. The TAAF is a non-profit organization established in 1925 to promote and organize amateur athletics. Members include parks and recreation departments, along with individuals and organizations that contribute time, energy and effort toward producing successful amateur athletic events. The TAAF is proud to be recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as an Official State Games Program participant every year since 1991. We invite you to become a part of this world-class festival by competing or volunteering. Competitors: For more information or to register, go to taaf.com/gamesoftexas. Some eligibility restrictions apply, and registration deadlines vary per sport. Volunteers: Ages 15-and-older are welcome and receive free refreshments and a Games of Texas shirt. For more information about volunteering, visit taaf.com/volunteers. Registration ends July 12. “[The Games of Texas] provides Texans of all ages and skill levels a wholesome avenue for positive, personal development through sports and physical activity. Ages 15+$60 for 25 sessions or $3/class Thu.June 7-Aug. 16 7:30-8:30 a.m.Cindy Hallaran Pool With swimming being one of the most popular summer activities, it’s important to keep these safety tips in mind whenever you are in, on or around water. • Ensure that everyone in your family learns to swim well. • Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. • Always swim with a buddy. • Actively supervise kids or designate a responsible adult to supervise—even if lifeguards are present. Always stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions. • Have inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard- approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone. • If you go boating, wear a life jacket. Most boating fatalities occur from drowning. •Establish rules for your family and enforce them without fail. For example, teach children to always ask permission to go near water, set limits based on each person’s ability, do not let anyone play around drains and suction fittings, and do not allow swimmers to hyperventilate before swimming underwater or have breath-holding contests. • Even if you do not plan on swimming, be cautious around natural bodies of water including ocean shoreline, rivers and lakes. Cold temperatures, currents and underwater hazards can make a fall into these bodies of water dangerous. • Avoid alcohol. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination, affects swimming and diving skills, and reduces the body’s ability to stay warm. • If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability. • Enroll in Red Cross home pool safety, water safety, first aid and CPR/AED courses to learn how to prevent and respond to emergencies. SAFETY FOR YOUR HOME POOL OR HOT TUB • Install and use barriers around your entire pool area that are at least 4-feet high with gates that are self-closing, self-latching and open outward and away from the pool. The latch should be high enough to be out of a small child’s reach. Safety covers and pool alarms should be added as additional layers of protection. • If you have an above-ground or inflatable pool, remove access ladders and secure the safety cover whenever the pool is not in use. • Remove any structures that provide access to the pool, such as outdoor furniture, climbable trees, decorative walls and playground equipment. • Keep toys that are not in use away from the pool and out of sight. Toys can attract young children to the pool. • Have appropriate emergency equipment, such as reaching or throwing life-saving devices, life jackets and a first aid kit. CHECK OUT OUR SWIM LESSON OPTIONS ON PAGES 34 & 35. WATER SAFETY TIPS 33COLLEGE STATION PARKS & RECREATION SUMMER GUIDE 2018 | AQUATICS | 34 It is important to review all sections of the Swim Parent Handbook (cstx.gov/swim) before enrolling your child in lessons. If the answer is no, then that is the level in which they should enroll. Names added by Aug. 15 will be recognized during the Veterans Day Ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 11. The Wall of Honor, a centerpiece of the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial, includes names of thousands of veterans who have served our country in military service. This is a rare opportunity to honor your beloved veteran, living or deceased, by adding their name to the wall. It is $150 per name. The Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial is located within the Veterans Park and Athletic Complex at 3101 Harvey Rd. Learn more: BVVM.ORG or info@bvvm.org
