In typical gatherings, a popular line of conversation revolves around occupation. It’s a universal,
easy conversation starter. When asked about my occupation, I proudly tell people I’ve served in
the parks and recreation field for more than 25 years.
They usually respond by saying, “Wow, you get to play and have fun for a living?”
To be honest, there’s some truth to that. It’s fun to go to the pools and see hundreds of smiling
faces, watch my child compete in our sports leagues, observe our senior programs, or visit a
playground. The rewards of those moments are unmeasurable.
But Parks and Recreation is so much more than just fun.
Just as water, sewer, and public safety are considered essential public services, a robust, active
system of parks and recreation programs are vitally important to establishing and maintaining a
community’s quality of life, enhancing the health of families and youth, and contributing to our
economic and environmental well-being.
Parks also improve the local tax base and increase property values of privately owned land located
near parks. A review of 25 academic studies by Texas A&M found that 80 percent concluded parks
had a positive impact on property values.
The Parks and Recreation Department is proud of being an award-winning, dedicated group of
public servants. In the past year, our department has been recognized by the National Recreation
and Parks Association, Texas Recreation and Parks Society, Texas Amateur Athletic Federation,
Arbor Day Foundation, Keep Brazos Beautiful, Sport’s Events Media Group, American Red Cross,
Wreaths Across America and Texas Public Pool Council.
Our staff is among the most dedicated and passionate in Texas. We’re responsible for about
1,400 acres of parkland, 58 developed parks, two community centers, two cemeteries, three
swimming pools, one skate park, 12 ponds, three dog parks and thousands of customers.
Thank you for allowing us to do what we do!
Kelly Kelbly

Playgrounds offer so much more than a place for kids to burn off some energy. They provide a safe,
engaging, and colorful experience, where kids can utilize their minds and bodies, which have lifelong
positive effects. Parks and play areas are also a way to foster community and are a great learning tool for
not only all ages, but also all abilities. It allows kids to play together, yet still move at their own pace.
Because of the importance of play for all children, it is imperative to ensure that there is a play-friendly
space designed with a desire to include all.
In 2013, the Rotary Club approached the City of College Station with an inspired idea – an inclusive
playground that caters to all children, especially those with special needs. Other area Lions, Rotary and
Kiwanis Clubs have joined to bring all the major service groups together as they work towards the first all-
inclusive playground in the Brazos Valley, called the Fun for All Playground at Central Park.
This destination, all-access park will go beyond the necessary guidelines of accessibility and consider new
ideas for inclusion. The playground will serve various ability levels while incorporating educational aspects.
It will integrate activities and facilities that include both active and free/inventive play areas for ages
2-5 and 5-12, as well as facilities for teen and adult participants. Using nature-based themes, the park
will encourage exploration and learning of the natural world, which will challenge and spark imagination.
Amenities include chair swings for persons will limited mobility, sensory items for those with Autism, a
splash pad, nature trails, gardens, interactive elements of play and a multi-sport field, named Crow Field,
built in honor of Carolyn & John David Crow.
The 3.5 million dollar project will largely be funded through donations and the fundraising efforts of area
Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis clubs. $1,544,547 has been allocated thus far through generous donors and
organization fundraisers. The College Station City Council approved an architectural contract spring of 2016
with Luna Architecture & Design. Part of the parkland dedication funds were used for the contract design
and engineering services for the playground. David Schmitz, Parks & Recreation Director said the project
will be built in phases dependent on the fundraising progress. Conceptual designs show a seasonal event
plaza, swing space, an ages 5 to 12 play area and a multisport field as possible options for the first phase.
If you would like to find out more about the Fun for All Playground, donate or become actively involved,
visit funforallplaygroundbcs.org.

While there have been minor fence and grating repairs at Thomas and Cindy Hallaran pools, the
bulk of the renovations will be noticeable at Adamson Lagoon.
NEW ADDITIONS: The mini-water park will receive new recreation water features that enhance
the lagoon’s tropical theme. The stump slide was a long-standing guest favorite but saw
significant degradation the last few years. That feature has been replaced with a slightly larger,
custom tree house slide. For our younger guests, in place of the frog slide, they will experience
a dual gator slide, as well as the addition of a crow’s nest shower feature in the baby pool. The
new water entertainment will be ready for use by season opening.
LOOKING AHEAD: After the 2017 summer season, Cindy Hallaran pool will undergo a significant
project to restore piping below the deck and in the pump room. These improvements will better
regulate leaks. To complete this process, the east end of the pool deck will be removed, and
repairs will be made to the piping below and into the pump room. The project will be completed
by the 2018 season.

Story by Hallie Kutch,Marketing Staff Assistant
DISCGOLF
As a spin-off of golf and recreational Frisbee throwing, disc golf has had unconventional athletes in its realm since the 1960s.
Invented in California as an easy, affordable, pick-
up-and-play game, disc golf has matured into a thriving sport that’s one of the fastest growing in America. The City of College Station Parks & Recreation offers disc golf courses in Oaks Park,
Southern Oaks Park, and Wolf Pen Creek Park.
The game inherited much of its lingo and rules from the classic game of golf. The obvious difference is instead of golf balls and clubs,
players use a flying disc. The goal is to throw the
disc from a tee area across a fairway to a “hole,” which is usually a suspended metal basket. Scoring is the same as golf with the low score winning. The object of the game is to finish the
course with the fewest number of throws.
Disc golf’s distinct informal culture is what draws many of its players. The simplicity of the rules and easily accessible courses makes it a fun,
challenging and affordable pastime for all ages
and skill levels.
BASIC DISC GOLF RULES
Tee ThrowsEach hole begins with a tee throw. Tee throws must be completed within or behind the designated tee area.
Throwing OrderThe player with the fewest strokes on the previous
hole is the first to tee off on the next hole. After teeing off, the player whose disc is farthest from the hole throws first.
Fairway ThrowsFairway throws must be made from directly behind the lie. A run-up and normal follow-through after release is allowed unless the lie is
within 10 meters of the target. Any shot within 10
meters of the target requires that the player not move past the lie until the disc is at rest.
Mandatory
A mandatory is one or more designated trees
or poles in the fairway that must be passed as indicated by arrows.
Unplayable Lie
Any disc that comes to rest above the ground
is considered an unplayable lie. The disc must be thrown from the lie on the ground, directly underneath the unplayable lie, or relocated to avoid damage to the vegetation.
Out of BoundsIf any area of out of bounds is visible between the disc and out of bounds line, the disc is considered out of bounds. A throw that lands
out of bounds must be played from a point one
meter inbounds from where the disc went out of bounds. Permanent water hazards and public roads are always out of bounds.
Completion of Hole
A disc that comes to rest in the basket or chains constitutes successful completion of that hole.

The 515-acre 3ick Creek Park on East Rock Prairie
Road is completing extensive improvements, including the construction of a long-awaited nature center.
Established in 19 as part of land negotiations
to create a city industrial area, 3ick Creek Park displays a variety of native plant and animal species, including the endangered 5avasota 3adies Tresses. The park offers five miles
of marked trails and provides opportunities
for hiking, cycling, bird watching, equestrian activities, and nature study. It’s also the city’s largest off-leash dog park.
Lick Creek Nature Center
In 00, residents overwhelmingly approved the development of a .1 million nature center at 3ick Creek Park. The design was approved in 014, but construction was delayed until an adequate
water line could be installed for fire protection.
Torrential rains last spring and summer caused additional delays.
Thankfully, the nature center’s construction and
other improvements in the park are underway
and are expected to be finished this summer.
The nature center will be the park’s focal point and will provide citizens and visitors an educational
opportunity to learn about the animals and
plants that call the park home. Features include a ,400-square foot building with a meeting room, restrooms, indoor and outdoor classrooms, an amphitheater and native plant displays.
Other Improvements
As a part of the 4ayor’s 4onarch Pledge to help save the threatened butterfly population, the park will include a monarch-friendly demonstration
garden and a butterfly trail with abundant
milkweed · the butterfly’s host plant · and other nectar-producing plants. The site will be a prime spot to watch the monarchs’ annual migration and metamorphosis.
The rerouting of trails will improve the flow and create a major pathway that connects the nature center to the park’s west entrance at Pebble Creek Parkway, which is the trailhead for the
3ick Creek Hike and )ike Trail that winds more
than five miles across town to Creek =iew Park. Trail surfaces also will be upgraded, and new signage and maps will guide visitors through the trail system.
4eanwhile, informational signage throughout the park will identify trees, plants, birds, insects, butterflies, and wildlife. )enches along trails and at each trail intersection will allow visitors
to pause and enjoy the park’s beautiful scenery.
)icycle racks will also be accessible at the four major entryways.
The improvements and amenities enhance one of
College Station’s favorite recreational areas and
make it more accessible ¶ and enjoyable · for young and old alike. For more on College Station’s park system, go to cstx.gov/parks.
Features include a 2,400-square-foot building with a meeting room, restrooms,
indoor and outdoor classrooms, an amphitheater and native plant displays.

As part of the 2008 bond election, College Station voters approved the $3.37 million dollar expansion,
which includes a new 15,000-square-foot building with a second gymnasium, complete with wood
flooring, three additional activity classrooms and a fitness room loaded with all new equipment.
The development will support the growing needs of the community and enhance educational classes,
after-school and senior programs, and will provide additional rental space for community use. The
expansion should be complete in August, which will allow community programs to continue while the
existing structure is renovated.
The improvements will keep the recreation center as the social hub for the surrounding community
while preserving the memories and heritage of the historic building. In September, the existing facility
will undergo renovations that include an expanded community room to host a larger number of guests.
The computer lab also will be relocated and upgraded, and the gymnasium will receive upgraded
lighting and repairs to the existing floor. The project is expected to be complete by next spring.

Summer might be vacation time for our kids,
but it’s the library’s busiest season. As kids,
tweens, young adults, and teachers get a break from school, the library makes sure that we have plenty of ways to stay entertained, retain the hard-won knowledge from the school year, and ¶
for those of us who have outgrown school ¶ learn
something new.
We have many great children’s programs with lots of chances to meet animals, see scientists in
action, sing songs, play games, and hear stories.
For teens, we will again have the TEE5S Publish program that culminates in teen participants being published writers, a book swap, and a pool
party. )ut we don’t want adults to feel left out.
We want to see grownups this summer, too If you love the outdoors, we have activities for you
Have you ever wanted to startor improve your garden?
Want to learn about keeping bees?
What about bird watching?
As the recipient of a grant from the 5ational
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 5OAA,
we will also have opportunities for you to ask a scientist about current environmental topics.
While many of our programs focus on the
outdoors, we will always be your best source
of indoor entertainment, too. We have many books, e-books, and movies for you to enjoy when you need to beat the heat. And don’t forget audiobooks for your summer road trips.

|COLLEGE STATION PARKS & RECREATION SUMMER GUIDE 2017 | LARRY J. RINGER LIBRARY
The City of College Station has embarked on a construction project to expand and renovate Larry J.
Ringer Library. The $8.39 million dollar project was approved by 68 percent of College Station voters
in the 2008 bond election. The renovations and expansion will be implemented in phases so the
library can remain open and accessible to the public throughout the 18-24 month construction period.
Community programs and library activities will continue as scheduled.
PROJECT GOALS: The renovations will double the square footage of the building and triple the
size of the meeting rooms for a total of 15,000 square feet. The addition of five rooms for studying
and researching, a shaded outdoor reading area, and extending the size of meeting rooms and the
children’s and teen’s areas will support the growth of community programs and favorite library
activities. A key focal point of the project is the 16,000 square feet of additional parking that will
mitigate congested parking, improve access and ensure safe and convenient parking for visitors. The
library will also be upgrading and incorporating improved technology.
There will be enhancements in Wi-Fi capabilities and stabilities as well as more opportunities to charge
devices, which will provide more efficient service and ensure that visitors have quick access to the
information they need.
Interested in the vision of the project? Feel free to ask the reference desk for the first draft of the
drawings. You can also stay updated by following the library’s website and social media accounts.

60 |COLLEGE STATION PARKS & RECREATION SUMMER GUIDE 2017 |AGGIE FIELD OF HONOR
“Once an Aggie, always an Aggie,” is a motto that transcends death and highlights
the importance of being a member of the Aggie family. For more than 30 years,
former students of Texas A&M envisioned a final resting place that would honor
the extraordinary bonds formed by Aggies.
As a result, the City of College Station collaborated with Texas A&M to build the
Aggie Field of Honor and Memorial Cemetery to commemorate fallen Aggies and
their loved ones.
The beautifully landscaped Memorial Cemetery covers 56 acres and features
a committal shelter, information center, columbarium, and standard burial
plots. Another 20 acres are dedicated to the Aggie Field of Honor to reflect the
greatness, loyalty, and the connection that binds Aggies together.
The Field of Honor features the Spirit Gate, which is oriented toward Kyle Field to
honor the life and spirit of those who have passed. The Spirit of Aggieland travels
in a ceremonial way from campus to the Aggie Field of Honor through this final
gateway.
You only need to be an Aggie in heart and spirit to purchase a plot in the Aggie
Field of Honor and Memorial Cemetery. Anyone who has a love for the university,
its traditions, and our community is welcome. For more information, visit
fieldofhonor.cstx.gov or call 979.764.5049.
